How-To questions... ldap.conf
Ok, first of probably numerous questions. In my FC5 setup, there are two ldap.conf files. /etc/openldap/ldap.conf /etc/ldap.conf If I understand things properly, the first is used to tell NSS and PAM modules to talk to LDAP. The second is for LDAP clients. (Is that right?) However a further point also is confusing. In the IDEALX how-to, the two files are configured differently, with the

Painless migration from 2.2.x on old server to 3.0.x on new server needed ASAP
I need to painlessly migrate on old Samba 2.2.x installation to a new server running 3.0.x (3.0.14a for now). Time is of the essence as a hardware problem is causing intermittent operation of the old server that seems to be getting worse (actually it is looking doubtful that it will be back up at this point). I do have a backup of the smb.conf, the Samba .tdb files, /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow.

Password expiration
Hello, I still can't figure out why my users' passwords are expiring. Ever since we switched to LDAP, passwords expire every 14 days. Here is an example LDAP user entry: version: 1 # LDIF Export for: uid=sgoodrich,ou=Users,dc=trec,dc=us # Generated by phpLDAPadmin ( http://phpldapadmin.sourceforge.net/ ) on September 6, 2005 10:56 am # Server: TREC (localhost) # Search Scope: base #

Servers disappear from Network neighborhood
I am using Samba-PDC-LDAP with samba-3.0.20b-1. On my file servers I am using samba-3.0.10-1.4. I'm not sure exactly what is happening but every couple of weeks the file servers disappear form network neighborhood. I checked browstat on my Windows system and it points to my PDC as the master browser and I checked the wins.dat file on my PDC and the systems were there. I did not check

delete user script
Does anyone know what the unix UID is deleting a user in USRMGR? I'm using Samba with ldap and while I can create users just fine with usrmgr (logged in as myself, but when I delete a user, it seems to have trouble running my "delete user script" My samba log shows: [2005/09/15 10:19:42, 1] lib/smbldap.c:another_ldap_try(1011) Connection to LDAP server failed for the 15 try!

Ext3fs/ReiserFS Performance Enhancing
Hello All, I have been doing some research to find a method to increase the performance of writes to the hard drives in my servers. I am running Samba and all writes to the server hard drives are taking at least 3 to 10 times (It varies) the amount of time it took to write such files on our older Windows NT 4.0 File Server. The following information is provided to keep this issue on track...

Samba 2.2.7 and NIS
Is there a way to get Samba to validate users against the NIS (not NIS+) database. I've tried compiling with --with-nis but when I try to access a share I get this message in the samba log: [2002/11/26 16:25:08, 0] passdb/pdb_nisplus.c:make_sam_from_nisresult(460) NIS+ lookup failure: NIS+ service is unavailable or not installed It appears that it is still using NIS+ functions. 3.0.14 to 3.0.23c Invalid SID
Trying to upgrade from 3.0.14a to 3.0.23c. So far, things seem to be working, but the following entries appear in the smbd error log. The test machine is a domain client (server is still 3.0.14). The sids listed are exactly as they appear in the ldap tables. What makes them invalid? Anyone know. [2006/10/19 11:34:10, 1] passdb/pdb_interface.c:pdb_default_uid_to_rid(1227) Could not peek rid
