Finding functions in uninstalled libraries
(Many thanks to David Barron & Jonathan Baron for pointing me to 'recode' in
the 'car' package).
I think I've been told this before, but how do I search for a
function/keyword in libraries I don't yet have installed?
(ie. on the CRAN site I tried the search engines with "recode" etc., but
didn't pick up the car package this way)

RE: z-scores for different factor levels
Hi Stuart,
I often use this small function
standardize <- function(x) ( x - mean(x, na.rm=T) ) / sqrt(var(x,
na.rm=T))
to standardize variables.
You should be able to use this to do what you want by splitting the data
frame into sections based on the factor level, using standardize() to create
a new variable in each section, then paste the data frame back together.
Something like:

ks.test one-sample - where can I get a list of the strings specifying the distribution?
Dear all,
One can use ks.test(x,y) for a one-sample kolmogorov-smirnov test:
x being the data sample
y being a string specifying a distribution
I notice the help on ks.test does not tell you how to get such a list. Is
this a hole in my R knowledge?
Where can I get a list of the strings specifying the possible
distributions?
and more specifically
What would be the string and following

an info on 3d representation
Dear list,
sorry to waste your time. I downloaded R and I like it very much.
However, my main interest is in plotting 3D graphics form imported data
(points and lines in a 3d space). I imported data in a very elegant way
but I wasn't able to find in R something similar to the simple "splot"
function of WGNUplot (I don't need persp, image, contour: my values are

all combinations of the elements of two vectors
Dear R-help readers,
I'm sure this problem has been answered but I can't find the solution.
I have two vectors
v1 <- c("a","b")
v2 <- c(1,2,3)
I want an easy way to produce every possible combination of v1, v2 elements
Ie I want to produce
c("a1","a2","a3", "b1","b2","b3")

help with regular expressions in R
I'm having trouble achieving the results I want using a regular expression.
I want to eliminate all characters that fall within square brackets as well
as the brackets themselves, returning an "". I'm not sure if it's R's use of
double slash escapes or something else that is tripping me up. If I only use
one slash I get

how to list variables enclosed in an environment
I'm having trouble with a Bioconductor package, an variable expected in an
environment does not seem to be there. As part of my investigation of the
problem (most likely on my end) I'd like to list the variables contained in
an environment. If you have an environment loaded, lets call it "pkgEnv',
how does one find what it does contain? Mark

nuisance variables
*Dear experts,*
Please excuse me for disturbing... Right now I am struggling with GLM a
bit... Would you be so kind to provide me a solution on using nuisance
variables. The problem is that I have data on Depression (volumetric
measurements of different brain regions) and I want to include age, gender
and education as nuisance parameters in the model. In the other words I
would like to model the

Matched pairs with two data frames
Hi,
I have a frame "treat" and want to find matched pairs in the data frame
"control". In the matched (combined) data frame there should be two
variables (0/1),indicating the "source" of the data (treat or control),
so that it is possibe to set a "filter" (extraxt/select data).
#Here are the dataframes (my real data frames have many variables)

splitting strings efficiently
I have a very long list of strings. Each string actually contains multiple
values separated by a semi-colon. I need to turn each string into a vector
of the values delimited by the semi-colons. I know I can do this very
laboriously by using loops, nchar, and substr, but it is terribly slow. Is
there a basic R function that handles this situation? If not, is there
perhaps a faster way to do it than

There are a few broken links on the R website.

Passing names of variables to functions
Hi,
I am still new to R and have a programming question. I have created a
small function which takes a parameter. In the function I want to be able
to refer to the names of the variables sent to the function (specifically
I want to be able to use the name of the variable given to the function in
an output table). For example, in the following (fictional) function I
want some way of printing

vertex labels in igraph from adjacency matrix
I am getting some unexpected results from some functions of igraph and
it is possible that I am misinterpreting the vertex numbers. Eg., the
max betweenness measure seems to be from a vertex that is not connected
to a single other vertex. Below if my code snippet:
require(igraph)
my.graph <- graph.adjacency(adjmatrix = my.adj.matrix, mode=c("undirected"))
