ACL propegation problem - any known issues?
We use POSIX ACLs (under ext2fs) with a fairly complicated set of
permissions. Each folder has default permissions that should cause anything
created under it to also have the correct permissions.
What I'm seeing is occasionally a folder will be created and its default
permissions are not set. When files are created under this folder, they of
course have the wrong permissions because there

"chdir failed" - could someone please explain what this error mea ns?
...e Googled, I've looked at the source, and I still can't understand why
this error appears. What's really odd is that everything seems to work
fine, in spite of the error. Could someone please explain what it means?
I'm concerned that it may somehow be related to the mysterious ACL
propegation problems I've been having.
For reference, here are the permissions on /export/downloads:

CIFS + NFS'ing a single filesystem w/ locking
...I also attempted to NFS mount the share from a RHEL3 box (which should
support kernel oplocks) and then share it back out with Samba. Locks do
not work here either (yes, I had anon and root properally set). I would
think that the kernel oplock code in RHEL3's kernel would allow the locks
to propegate down from Samba, and back out to the NFS server using lockd.
It could also be that my understanding of what a "lock" is is not
exactly correct. Ie: NFS lock != Samba lock. I have some indication of
this based on the locking directory that exists for Samba, and the fact
that lock on W...

...happens now when it is running in either server or domain modes. Initaly
this was running the 2.2 cvs from about 2 weeks ago. Today we upgraded it
to 2.2.1a release, and are having exactly the same problems.
We have tried deleting the machine account from the domain, and
waiting for changes to propegate accross the domain then re-joinning. Also
tried giving the machine a different name, but suffers the same errors.
The error log for the server (while in domain mode), states that it is
unable to authenticate the user agianst the domain, then states that it is
'disabling' the account.
