translating IDL to R
...reciate
* guidance regarding translation of IDL routines to R, generally
* assistance translating two IDL routines to R, specifically
Why I ask:
I'm slowly learning how to do atmospheric modeling. One language that
has been been popular in this space is IDL
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IDL_(programming_language)
which unfortunately is proprietary (not to mention butt-ugly, IMHO :-)
There is an emerging FOSS implementation, GDL
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Data_Language
but I can't presently install GDL on either my own workstation or the
cluster on which I do my "real work." And, unfo...

A general question: Is language S a component part of R?
In the "Introduction and preliminaries" the "An Introduction to R" manual
says about R: "... Among other things it has ... a well developed, simple
and effective programming language (Called 'S') ... ". Now I'm a little
confused. This means that language S is a component part of R? And S is not
free? But R is free? Or the mentioned S is only "a free

I'm sure Google has numbers about how much electricity/server cost they
save for X% performance improvement.

Is there paid support for R?
Hi,
I am trying to get R installed at work and I was asked if there were any
companies that offered support.
After searching on Google (many ways) and not find anything, I turn to you.
BTW, I did see Revolution R supports their flavor.
Thanks,
Chris

R, S, S-Plus, whence comes thy name?
I appeal to those entrusted with the keeping of the R flame, the S flame, and the S-Plus flame to relate a bit of history. How did S, S-Plus, and R get their names? Going from S to S-Plus appears clear, a commercial company purchased rights to S, developed a product that they wanted to indicate was related to S, but was more fully developed. This leaves me with only a rumor how S got its original

Best way to study internals of R ( mix of C, C++, Fortran, and R itself)?
How difficult is it to get a good feel for the internals of R, if you want
to learn the general code base, but also the CPU intensive stuff ( much of
it in C or Fortran?) and the ways in which the general code and the CPU
intensive stuff is connected together?
R has a very large audience, but my understanding is that only a small
group have a good understanding of the internals (and some of those
