Question about optimal filesystem with many small files.
...requirements).
The filesystem I use is ext3 with teh following options enabled:
Filesystem features: has_journal resize_inode dir_index filetype needs_recovery sparse_super large_file
Is there any way to improve performance in ext3? Would you suggest another FS for this situation (this is a prodution server, so I need a stable one) ?
Thanks in advance (and please excuse my bad english).

same system syncs of filesystems, yet changing ownerships;
Folks,
I'm setting up to sync files from a staging env to a prodution env, such
that the filesystems for both are served via nfs to their respective
systems. Thus, I can do the rsync on the nfs server as a 'advanced cp'.
rsnyc $parms filessystem filesystem2
Due to ownerships and permissions, I have to run this as root, but, I'd
like the files to bel...

Uninitialized constant in a template for production server only
Not sure what is going on here, we are trying to push out a new
version of one of our tools to production. Everything works perfectly
in development (mac) and on our staging server (debian sarge) but the
prodution server (debian sarge) hates what we have done.
We have some variables set in the various environments *.rb file
One of them is a link to another product. It changes based on what
environments for example we have in development.rb the following set:
OTHER_PRODUCT = "localhost:3002"

Problem with sieve and german umlauts
Dear list,
I?m running a postfix (2.5.6) / Dovecot (1.1.11) on a Centos 5.2 box.
I?ve written a small gui application to simply create Out of Office
replys with sieve. The resulting code did work with maildrop without any
problems. Now sieve fails when it meets any german umlauts like ? or ?.
It just stops compiling the scripts and complains about the missing
"};". A simple fix is

fcgid woes
hi there,
I''m running rails on apache2 with mod_fcgid which works, but I''m having trouble with environments adn separate dev & prodution vhosts. I have DefaultInitEnv set in the VirtualHost directive for each (as production | development), which works fine after a server restart for whichever vhost I hit first, but thereafter the RAILS_ENV seems to be locked into one dispatch.fcgi which then handles requests for both vhosts. So if I...

Questions about converting maildir to mdbox.
First of all i would like to thanks Timo for the excellent job done in
dovecot.
We are using it in you prodution server with about 5 millions of emails and
it is pretty good, only a performance problens but i guess it is realated to
ocfs2 that we are using.
So lets begin:
We are using dovecot 2.0.6 with maildir in an ocfs2 partiton.
It is pretty slow access in peak time, but it is related to ocfs2 as i sai...

Any compelling reasons to upgrade to 5
Just popped back on the list because I was curious about this. I've read
the information about virtualization and other new features. I'm just
wondering (as someone who installed CentOS 2 years ago and basically
hasn't thought much about it my OS other than using it since then) if any
piece of it except for virtualization got updated significantly enough to
consider an upgrade. My

Hello everyone,
I know that many people know not to use .local, but in the last weeks
we had several People having problems using .local.
So to all peopel starting implementing Samba 4 AD, read this:

So stop using .local as TLD. Maybe there should be a

Wait for 5 or just use 4.4?
I'm a relative newbie to all this so pardon me if the following are all
stupid questions.
Firstly, I'm setting up a web server and gone from planning to use Ubuntu
(due to some familiarity as a desktop at home) to CentOS based on
recommendations by experienced webhosters.
However now that I looked into CentOS, I find myself at a point where it's
transitting to a major new version. So

Don't make cookie-stored sessions a default
Hi!
Before Rails 2.0 is coming, I suggest not to make CookieStore the
default session storage. It stores clear-text values on the client-side
and the integrity check hash can be brute-force attacked.
I understand that this has been set due to speed advantages, but I
believe it''s better to make better security a default.
I''ve written a blog post about this

Licensing and Copyright
Hi all,
I fear this discussion will quickly devolve into a recursive flame-
fest, but it needs to be broached, so here we go. Note that I kind of
think this is more of dev topic than users, but I want to make sure
everyone knows the conversation is happening and can easily
participate. This is also likely to be the first of a series of
conversations I''ll be starting to try to
