Admin privilages for root in a samba domain on a win2000 box
Just a FYI for those that are interested. I found that to give admin privilages, in Windows, to Domain user "root" do this on tha Samba Domain Controller: net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Admins" unixgroup=root I can now install/remove software logged in as a domain user "root" on Win2k. I've never seen this directly stated before an...

Security Hell
I have been trying to setup two samba servers on Fedora Core 2 for the past 30 hours and am about to jump out a window. I'm simply trying to create a few shares that multiple WinXP clients can have readonly access to and a select few have write privilages. Also, a few shares that are are private for a select few users with write privilages. In all cases, anybody should be able to browse the machine and access most shares. I have read the smb.conf(5) manual many times... almost memorized the entire thing ;) Valid users in the smbpasswd file inclu...

Am not able to create a XenU Domain forFedoraCore 4
Greetings and Happy Holiday Season: I filed an open issue with Fedora installer and rpm because of the same error. I was suggested to look in the xend-debug.log for detailed logs on the problem. This is enabled in nano /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp by adding the following lines (logfile /var/log/xend.log.debug) (loglevel DEBUG) then removing the logs rm -f /var/log/xend.log rm -f

Change password via rpcclient?
Is it possible to point rpcclient at a samba PDC and change the user's password? With rpcclient I can "logon" to the PDC as someone with admin privilages (to do adddriver, etc..) from a remote machine. smbpasswd -r seems to provide no similiar functionality.

PDC and dividing roaming profile
I have this problem... I am working on implimenting a school network. I have two kinds of users on my network: students and facutly. I have also two types of operating system on my network: win 98 and win XPP. Here is the rights and privilages I am thinking about giving my users Students (usage only in computer labs): - limited roaming profile (basically, deny desktop roaming profile) - give them access to some network devices: printers and file servers. Faculty (usage in offices): - give them access to network devices: mainly file...

troubleshooting a custom passdb module
Greetings, Is there any tips/docs on trouble shooting a custom passdb module? The module compiles and can be loaded without problems I can even access shares with my username and password. When I try to assign privilages so our tech members can join computer to the domain, I get a error message. Even with level 10 dumps it is hard to see where the problem is. Our user database contains all the normal UNIX account info, uid, gid, etc. When it comes to Samba it our user database only contain LMHASH and NTHASH. Wh...

Nessus test issues with open shares
...e accessed without authentication. The remote host has an accessible ARCSERVE$ share. Several versions of ARCserve store the backup agent username and password in cleartext in this share., An attacker may use this flaw to obtain the password file of the remote backup agent and use it to gain privilages on the host. Solution is to limit the access to this share to backup account and domain administrator. Both of these are off of our Sun server running Solaris 10 as the OS. I'm thinking both directories are being shared via Samba. Although there is much I don't know about this sys...

[RFC] make extlinux work without mount the filesystem
...d I'm a developer from yocto project (an embedded linux project). The device or filesystem must be mounted before we can install the bootsector to the device if I understand correctly, for example: $ mount /dev/sdcX /tmp/mnt $ extlinux -i /tmp/mnt Usually, the mount command requires the root privilage, we may not have the root privilage when we work on a shared server. And in embedded linux development, usually, we need deploy the system on an file block (not a real device partition), for example: $ dd if=/dev/zero of=test.img count=100k bs=1k $ mke2fs -t ext3 -F test.img It would be great t...

x4500 resilvering spare taking forever?
I''ve got a Thumper running snv_57 and a large ZFS pool. I recently noticed a drive throwing some read errors, so I did the right thing and zfs replaced it with a spare. Everything went well, but the resilvering process seems to be taking an eternity: # zpool status pool: bigpool state: ONLINE status: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. ...(c:\Program Files\Ogg Vorbis SDK\(Include|Lib)), and have the sample projects add thoses dirs to the search path? Initally I put them in the msvc dir as this seems more convenient for the programmer (less configuring). But adiabatic reckons I shouldn't, because then the user would need higher privilages to install it. What do you think? <p>Secondly, is CVS meant to build? I got the nightly tarball, and I get these unresolved symbols when building libvorbisfile dynamically: vorbisfile.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _vorbis_synthesis_halfrate vorbisfile.obj : error LNK2001...

Samba - cannot print multiple copies
...ing the default lpd.conf and lpd.perms files. - not running passwords or custom freebsd users on samba. Strictly guest access by user nobody. - set up mode 1777 on the samba print dir - Ran checkpc -f -V. No problems. Had an old problem of not being able to access /dev/lpt0 but I fixed the access privilages (still wierd that we have to do that, the freebsd installed lpr didn't require that, why does lprng require changing the port's access rights?) - I can print multiple copies from the FreeBSD box if I run lpr -#N, up to the 20 limit I specified below. I will greatly appreciate help in f...
