specifying lme function with a priori hypothesis concerning between-group variation in slopes
I want to specify a 2-level mixed model using the lme function in order to test an a priori hypothesis about the between-group values of the slopes but don't know how to do this . Here is the problem. Consider first the case of a single group. The model is: Y_i= a +bX_i + error where I indexes the different values of X and Y in this group . Parsing variable-length delimited strings into a matrix
I'm struggling to find a way of parsing a vector of data in this sort of form: A,B,C B,B A,AA,C A,B,BB,BBB,B,B into a matrix (or data frame). The catch is that I don't know a priori how many entries there will be in each element, nor how many characters there will be. strsplit(vec,",") gets me a list, but I can't find a way of turning the list into a matrix. unlistlst)

AIC and model selection; not a R question
Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me answer a question that is bound to come up in my Master's defense. I'm using AIC to select models and my question is how do I know that the models I developed a priori contain the 'best' models in the system. naiveBayes: slow predict, weird results
I did this: nb <- naiveBayes(users, platform) pl <- predict(nb,users) nrow(users) ==> 314781 ncol(users) ==> 109 1. naiveBayes() was quite fast (~20 seconds), while predict() was slow (tens of minutes). why? 2. the predict results were completely off the mark (quite the opposite of the expected overfitting). suffice it to show the tables: pl: android blackberry ipad
