External Backup Systems?
...hould be reliable enough in that case. Backing up to DVDs are quite unreliable too, a simple scratch could render the backup useless. Also it would require quite a lot of DVDs to backup my data (at least 500GB!). The only other option I could think of is to use tapes, but this option can be quite pricy for a home user. So I was wondering what you guys use for external backups for a home system containing at least 500GB worth of important data? Regards Hamzah -- M. ...a gateway, they are cheap. You?d be using it kinda in reverse, but I don?t see why that shouldn?t be possible. Other than that, specialized cards have come down in prices, probably because ppl aren?t using them anymore. You might also want to look into Patton gateways, but they tend to be rather pricy and are a hell to set up unless you?re familiar with all the phone-related stuff. If your internet connection is decent, it might be a good idea to give up the POTS line and use a VOIP provider instead, with a asterisk connected to it. It would be the easiest way by far. Asterisk isn?t too compl...

challenge-response token
Hello, I have to find a solution logon through OpenSSH to OpenBSD machines from anywhere in the world (unsave computers). So I think I must use a challenge-response system with an hardware token that isn't connected to the computer. I do not want to use a RSA ACE/SERVER, so i can't use SecurID ? I can't use challenge response mode with cryptocard, because I want to protect it against

Grandstream GXW-4104 ???
How well does the Grandstream GXW-4104 or (8) work w/Asterisk? I would use a Cisco Switch w/FXO Ports but that would be a little "Pricy" I Can't use a Digium FXO Card, as the asterisk Server is offsite. SuperMicro X7DBE with CentOS4?
I am planning to build a server based on the SuperMicro X7DBE+-O motherboard. This server will have two dual-core Xeon processors and a 3ware 9550SX raid card. Has anyone built a server based on this motherboard? Are there any issues with the smp/dual-core support in CentOS4 that might cause problems? I appreciate any input. I'm just looking to find out about any possible problems before

Quadraphonics
Over the weekend I chanced by the house of a quadraphile friend of mine to check it his SQ setup. For those interested, he has a fairly decent Kenwood linear turntable with what I understand is a rather pricy cartridge manufactured by some company whose name escapes me, hooked into a Fosgate Tate II SQ decoder which is likewise hooked into two X10-D buffers then finally into a Marantz receiver. The whole system sounds absolutely wonderful on SQ records, and on non-SQ records the Tate II decoder has a &...

"Memory not mapped" when using .C, problem in Mac but not in Linux
Hello, I am aware this may be an obscure problem difficult to advice about, but just in case... I am calling a C function from R on an iMac (almost shining: bought by my institution this year) and gives a "memory not mapped" error. Nevertheless, exactly the same code runs without problem in a powerful computer using SuSE Linux, but also on my laptop of 2007, 32 bits, 2 GB RAM, running

Two Internet connections...
I do some occasional tech work for a cable TV/Internet service provider. They have now offered me free services, including cable Internet. I currently have a DSL service through the telephone company and, for several reasons including the fact that it is really unlimited service with no cap and it comes with newsgroup access (neither of which the cable service has), I'm not really prepared

Voice/Fax Modem advice
Folks A have a PCIe modem (Conexant ChipSet, PCI id = 14f1:2f83. It interfaces to my land-line (POTS) telephone line in the United States. On Windows, I had a good answering machine package (Ventafax) that reported CallerID, recorded messages, sent/received fax, and had a scripting language that let me say "To leave a message for Alice, press 1; to leave a message for Bob, press

Vorbis transform description
...;-) In fact we might as well get used to the fact right now that practically anything we want to do with an audio stream beyond addition probably is patented and I'm bracing to find out that addition is too. The patents are bogus, of course, but the legal route of saying so tends to be pricy. I'll not stray too far, but I'll mention that preliminary experiments on using envelope pre-clamping alone to control pre-echo (described later) produces results apparently as good as absurbly small blocks. Although I thought of this a while ago, I only got to try it recently b...

VoIP service through Asterisk?
Greetings. I did some digging with Google, the wiki, and on the archives, but didn't find a recent conclusive answer. If this is answered in the wiki or archives somewhere, please point me to it. I'm in the process of setting up an Asterisk box for home use. I've got a X100P card on the way. I've not decided what analog adapter(s) to get yet. The only phone service to hook up

How to fight with encrypted p2p
Hi I believe that whole question is in topic. Is there any way to recognize ( and then shape ) p2p traffic which is encrypted? Modern p2p clients have this ability moreover some of them have this enabled by default. Now I''m using ipp2p for iptables but as I know this doesn''t recognize encrypted traffic. Thanks in advance. Power burn test
I need a program that will just run everything at max so I can measure the max power used on some systems. My 'Kill a Watt' meter should show up early next week. SO run that CPU at max, using all memory, and keeping the harddrive spinning. I can jsut do pings on the lan card for it to stay awake. I have searched here and on the net and have come back with nothing.

big file server
Hi I plan to set up a big file server, something like motherboard with 4 ide ports and an additional 4 ide daughter card, a PIV proc and 512 or 1024 MB ram, a 100 or 1000 MB NIC, with 6 or 7 200 GB ide HDDs in a sigle box. I don't need lightning performance, just disk space. Of course this would be served by some linux os and samba questions (relative to samba configuration and behaviour) :

RAID Card for CentOS 3 compatibility
...motherboard with built in card. I been looking at the : 1. "3ware 64-bit PCI to SATA RAID Controller Card, Model "Escalade 8006-2LP", can I plug this card in on a 32 bits PCI slot or it need to be a 64 bit one. 2. 3Ware 7006-2 2 Port ATA RAID 3. Also I came across this one (less pricy than the 3ware ) LSI PCI to ATA RAID Controller Card, Model "MegaRAID ATA 133-2" Finally I got a Tyan server that has a built in Raid card, (RAID bus controller: Promise Technology, Inc. PDC20276) and the drivers are for the RH 7,8. So when I run the drivers it tells me that is not compa...
