Transform Rails site into DVD
I''m considering implementing a PHP based site that display videos with quite some database logic to Rails. Now we were considering publishing the site on DVD too. Is that possible (e.g. with RubyScript2Exe)? How fast is database performance going to be? Currently there are movies inside the database but we can extract them if necessary. The database scheme is quite large and the number

Use Rails or PHP?
...ecord concept seems to allow me to set up something that works with an existing table, but I want the ability to add tables without programming. I know how to do this in PHP and I can put the SQL into queries in RoR, but does ActiveRecord let me make a new table/object and refer to it without preprogramming? Keep in mind I want each table to have different attributes/columns. Sorry if this is vague and if I''m not clear. Here''s what I''m talking about: I make a table of CDs. So I say I want three columns (id, title, description) and then add it. Can i use ActiveRecord...

Benchmarking R, why sort() is so slow?
Hello everybody, I am making a modified version of "Stephan Steinhaus' benchmark test for number crunching, v. 2, (see http://www.scinetificweb.com/ncrunch/ncrunch.pdf for the original version), comparing several functions of some math/stat software. R is not performing bad at all... except for the sorting of a 1,100,000 random vector (test #3) which is the worst of all (see cell F3 in

R usage -- for article
Hello all, I write a decision-support column for a computing magazine, Intelligent Enterprise. In my next column, I'll be revisiting a topic I wrote on 3 years ago, open-source analytical software. R is perhaps the most successful open-source analytical package. I'd like to hear from users, especially those who chose R for some other reason than that it's free, about what

documentation?
Been learning * now for a couple of weeks and have all basic features running including VM, MoH, FX lines, iaxtel, and FWD. However, I seem to be lacking documentation on a lot of technical things and am wondering if I overlooked something that is obvious to others. (I do have the Handbook, have been doing a fair amount of google searches, and read the README.* files.) Examples, Where should I

Implementation of a Speex based hardware VOCODER
Hi everyone, I?m a graduate student in a Brazilian Intitute of Technology, and I?m doing some academic research regarding secure voice transmission over phone lines. One of our reserach goals is to implement a hardware vocoder, with low bit rates, and a preferably free algorithm, to be used in this secure voice system. Actually, there is a functional system using a proprietary AMBE

Am I missing somthing?
Should the following setup work? SIP UA---NAT---Internet---NAT---SIP UA If both UA's support STUN and report the external IP address in the SIP packet.. I am trying to get away from using canreinvite=no so that traffic can go directly between the UA's and not via the central server but I can't seem to get it to work.. Has anyone set this up and can give me some pointers??

Sub_scribe and a question
Dear all, I am trying to get an estimate of the intercept for a linear model. In this case, I know the slope of the model, can anyone tell me how to constrain the formula in lm() so that it only estimates the intercept not the slope? Many thanks in advance, Sincerely, Liqing Zhang Dept. of Eco. Evol. Biol. Univ. of CA, Irvine email: lzhang at uci.edu >From VM Mon Apr 30 08:18:45 2001

Can't there be a cd command?
R is quite a powerful environment. Here's a small way it could be even better. I wanted to change the working directory, so I tried the obvious thing > cd("foo") Error: couldn't find function "cd" Then I looked for `directory' in the FAQ but found nothing. A search for directory in the introduction also turned up nothing. A Google search for "gnu R

object size vs. file size
Hi, There is rather large discrepancy in the size of the object as it lives in R and the size of the object when it is written to the disk. The object in question is an S4 of a homemade class "sa". I first call a function that writes a list of these objects to a file called "data.RData". The size of this file is 14,411 KB. I would assume on average then, that each list

Multi-line help
I am looking for common practice ideas on how to handle multiple line phones. Is it common with asterisk to have the lines appear as programmable buttons? Or to just have itcm like buttons and use the dial 9 approach? What I am specifically interested in, is to have my line one appear on the first button (sip polycom phones) line two appear on the second button, and use the third as an intercom
