CentOS 5 - Issues with multimedia
Hi, I am having some issues with CentOS 5. -XMMS stops playing MP3s without apparent reason. I leave it playing some album and it will just stop whenever it feels like it. It will go into "pause" and just stay there. Pressing on the pause button to resume does nothing at all. I thought it could be some newly encoded songs, but it does the same for a song that I have played 100% times.

DMA disabled on SATA disk with Core Duo/i955 machine (Inspiron 6400)
I am trying to use CentOS 4 on this machine and it does not allow me to set DMA to 1, it just says that it is not possible. I have tried updating to the latest release and it still won't work. I have searched for it on Google and there is a thread mentioning the same machine and CentOS, but none of the solutions (-p, -X 12) seem to work at all and there is no "it works!!!!!"

X stopped working after compiling new kernel
Hi again, After quite a few stability problems with CentOS 4 and my laptop I have decided to go back to Centos 3. I installed it and got everything working alright, apart from the wireless network card. I need to use ndiswrapper and so require a newer kernel (2.4.26 at least), so I downloaded the kernel source 2.4.30, copied the right configuration (config-i686), made oldconfig and installed the

OT: CentOS hosting recommendations
Hi everyone, I am looking for a dedicated server with CentOS. Any recommendations? Ideally I would like to use one of the CentOS sponsors, but I think that there are far too many to be able to compare them all by refreshing (maybe there is a page with just a list of links to sponsors but I couldn't find it). Thanks Gabriel ___________________________________________________________

Kernel source package missing?
Hi everyone, I've been looking for the package kernel-source-2.6.9-34 (from 4.3) and I can't find it anywhere. In fact, the only mention to it I have found is on the RedHat errata (I also have the RHEL CDs and it is not there either). Where can I get it from? I wanna compile some packages and I need the kernel source. Thanks Gabriel

Constant disk activity
Hi, I am running centos on a laptop and the HD keeps on making noises every so often, even when I go to runlevel 1 and stop everything that could be doing so (hotplug, smartd, cron, anacron, atd, syslogd...). Is there any way of finding out what is accessing the disk? Not only it shortens battery life, it is annoying while working in a quiet room. Thanks Gabriel Send instant messages to your

updating ALSA
Hi, I have installed CentOS 4 beta and everything works apart from the sound. Searching online I have found that Fedora Core 3 requires upgrading ALSA to the very latest version for sound to work on this laptop, that probaly means that I need to upgrade ALSA. Is there anytwhere I can get updates RPMs/SRPMs or do I have to compile the updates? AFAIK alsa is now part of the kernel, will this cause

Whitebox to CentOS upgrade
Hi everyone, I have a home computer that I use to develop on, which it is running Whitebox 3.0. I have copied all the required CentOS 3.4 RPMs to /RPM, created a new yum repository and then updated, but when I try to upgrade, it fails on a "recursive dependency on glibc". Is there any way I can force that dependency? Would it be easier to upgrade to 4.0 using Anaconda? Thanks for all

DocX support in OpenOffice
Has anyone got the docx plugin for OpenOffice 2 running in CentOS? I have tried using the OpenOffice.org rpms and the ones in CentOS, but the plugin does not seem to work. To get it working I extracted the rpm from Novell, then copied the files to the registry/ folders and the Odfconverter to the program/ folder, but I can't get any ooxml files open at all, it gives me an error about the

Ignoring DDC settings on Xorg
I am trying to set up a new 1400x900 widescreen monitor, but I just cannot get it to work correctly. The closest I get is 1400x900, which causes lots of vertical blur bands. I have tried with two different machines with i945 and ATi cards, running CentOS 4 and Ubuntu, always with the same result. My investigations indicate that the monitor reports itself to be "1440x900". It also

udev - by-id
Hi, I am trying to set up a CentOS 4 machine with various iSCSI mounts for Oracle, but devices keep on moving around, causing the mounts to fail while called by the sd[a-f] names. We thought about using labels, but, as some of the partitions do not use EXT3, that was discarded, so we thought about using udev and by-id. The problem is that udev does not seem to create the by-id folder or any

Kickstart Installation - Is it possible to set a fixed IP for installation?
Hi everyone, I am trying to set up an automated CentOS installation system. My idea is to use PXE to boot the kernel/initrd and pass the kickstart options to the kernel from there. This works correctly until it boots up Linux. As soon as it does that it makes a DHCP request and, unsurprisingly, it gets the same one (same MAC) but it also gets the filename and next-server details. Then Anaconda

OT - IP Tables - forwarding to localhost
Hi, I am trying to set up a firewall rule so calls to old_mailserver:25 get redirected to localhost:25. I have seen quite a few rules and none seem to work. I have tried with the firewall enabled (configured to allow smtp) and disabled, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. One of the commands I have been using is: /sbin/iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -p tcp -d old_mailserver_ip/32

Fedora Directory Authentication on CentOS 5
Hi, I am trying to set up a Fedora Directory server for centralised authentication. I configure the directory server, add a user called (via the Java GUI) test and then, using system-config-authentication, enable LDAP on both tabs. I then try to log-in using the test account I set up on the directory, but I get an error message in /var/log/messages: May 30 16:28:27 ds1 sshd(pam_unix)[4445]:
