Ogg/Mp3 Encoding Comparison
Hello All,
I realize that this is all highly unscientific and probably
unprofessional as well. Still, I couldn't resist the urge.
I ripped track 6 (prelude) from Yanni's "Tribute" album and encoded it
with the latest versions of lame and oggenc. I present below the
command line I used for both encodes:
time oggenc -a 'Yanni' -t 'Prelude' -l 'Tribute' -c "tracknumber=6" Prelude.wav Prelude.ogg

Attempting to install Prelude to Darkness in Wine
Hello all. I have recently been trying to run a rather old-ish indie rpg called Prelude to Darkness in Wine. The installer runs uptil 100% and then I get the following error message in the terminal:

I'd quite like to see this be an explicit opt-out for the known-broken
platforms. We've listed the SPARC and PPC64 issues. For x86 I need to
refresh my memory as a prelude to trying to fix it... was the issue
*just* that Qemu tends to ship with a broken BIOS that misdescribes the
virtio devices (and any assigned PCI devices) as being behind an IOMMU
when they're not, in the rare case that Qemu actually exposes its
partially-implemented virtual IOMMU to the guest...

Dovecot, JavaMail, UIDs and Message Numbers
Hi,
new to this list, so a little prelude to my issue with Dovecot.
We have been using JavaMail against Cyrus for ages, and developed Webtop, a huge Java web collaboration application running on them in production in various installations for all this time.
Recently we had to run the same software against Dovecot pre-existing accounts run...

Anova unequal variance
I found this paper on ANOVA on unequal error variance. Has this be
incorporated to any R package? Is there any textbook that discuss the
problem of ANOVA on unequal error variance in general?

musttail & alwaysinline interaction
...ce the call to "tobeinlined" will be inlined.
However, because opt checks for the correctness of the module when it is
being loaded, it fails the verifyModule() check with:
cannot guarantee tail call due to mismatched parameter counts
musttail call fastcc void @tailcallee(i32 3)
opt: prelude.inlined.ll: error: input module is broken!
These are just experiment, but I suspect that I will have the same problem
when I am constructing IR with the LLVM API: That is, the verifyModule
sanity check will cause the IR to be considered illegal, *even though the
final IR that would have been gene...

send_data => invalid byte sequence in US-ASCII
...ly, my View presents
the result:
<img src="<%= url_for(:controller => ''reports'', :action => ''plot'')

However, the send_data() call results in a server error:
ArgumentError (invalid byte sequence in US-ASCII):
<internal:prelude>:8:in `synchronize''
.../Ruby/lib/ruby/1.9.1/webrick/httpserver.rb:111:in `service''
So the question: Where do I specify the encoding? And what encoding is
appropriate for a .png binary?

Aggregating logs from numerous FreeBSD machines
...warn me when processes run away with the CPU
or RAM, or disks get too full.
I've found a variety of things that almost do this. Nagios is good at paging
for service failures, disk full warnings, and that sort of thing, but it
doesn't seem well-suited for aggregating log messages. The Prelude IDS seems
to have some kind of console, as does Samhain, but I want to try to avoid
having different interfaces for each service type.
I realize this is something that could be had using IPSec-protected remote
logging with some greps and interface stuff bolted on, but if there's a
ready-m...

[LLVMdev] asmwriting times (was Re: LLVMContext: Suggestions for API Changes)
...hello.ll was some 5.3 MB for LLVM
2.6/2.7svn (4.4 MB for LLVM 2.5; the assembler programs are exactly the
same, though, the size differences are apparently due to formatting
changes in LLVM 2.6/2.7svn). Note that the code size is quite large
because the function definitions compiled from Pure's prelude are all
included.
The tests were performed on an AMD Phenom 9950 4x2.6GHz with 4GB RAM
running Linux x86-64 2.6.27. The following configure options were used
to compile LLVM (all versions) and Pure 0.31, respectively:
LLVM: --enable-optimized --disable-assertions --disable-expensive-checks
