This is on Solaris-10 update 3 on amd64 and I have compiled samba using Sun Studio 11 compiler suite and no other options to configure than --prefix=/some/path. Solaris-10 comes with samba 3.0.21b preinstalled and if I use smbpasswd from that installation there is no problems and the smaba-3.0.25(a/b) version works alright with >8 chars passwd once it is set. My first attempt at using Wine within Ubuntu to run my favourite email program - Pegasus - resulted in a problem. Pegasus is preinstalled on windows98, I gave the correct filepath and everything appeared to be loading well until it asked for a 'user'. Gave my normal Pegasus username and got the error message that the user does not exist. Tried various permutations of upper and lower case (Knowing Linux is case sensative)...

It worked fine with most programs...but not Half-Life and some other games... My recommendation is that you dont use a preinstalled version of windows as the basis of a wine installation...
