Odd issue: power_saving
On a running system, I was just logging in, and it took for-bloody-ever. I run top, and ok, a load of 5 still shouldn't do that; we have folks that do put real loads on these systems. But top shows me power_saving frequently coming to the top, with a 94% - 100% CPU usage, and there's two threads of power_saving. Add to this that I don't *ever* remember seeing such a kernel thread. So,

[PATCH 5/7] vga_switcheroo: Use device link for HDA controller
...9;s power state is now self-governed, rather than GPU-governed, whereas the GPU's power state is no longer fully self-governed. (The HDA controller needs to runtime suspend before the GPU can.) It is thus crucial that runtime PM is always activated on the HDA controller even if CONFIG_SND_HDA_POWER_SAVE_DEFAULT is set to 0 (which is the default), lest the GPU stays awake. This is achieved by setting the auto_runtime_pm flag on every codec and the AZX_DCAPS_PM_RUNTIME flag on the HDA controller. A side effect is that power consumption might be reduced if the GPU is in use but the HDA controller i...

[PATCH] x86/ACPI: invalidate BGRT
Since the image pointed to may (and generally will) live in boot services memory (which we add to the global memory pool long before ACPI tables get looked at), we should prevent Dom0 from trying to retrieve the image data. The alternatives would be to - not add boot services memory to the global pool at all, or - defer adding boot services memory until Dom0 indicates it is safe to do so, or -

CentOS 6 : Tip for significantly increasing battery life / reducing power consumption (Thinkpad X220 Tablet)
Hello, I was not happy with the power consumption of CentOS 6 x86_64 on a new Lenovo Thinkpad x220 Tablet and I worked on reducing it. I just wanted to share with the list one of the changes which gave me the most significant improvement. As per http://www.williambrownstreet.net/blog/?p=387, add the following kernel arguments to the GRUB boot configuration: pcie_aspm=force

[PATCH 0/7] Modernize vga_switcheroo by using device link for HDA
Modernize vga_switcheroo by using a "device link" to enforce a runtime PM dependency from an HDA controller to the GPU it's integrated into. Remove thereby obsoleted code and fix a bunch of bugs. Device links were introduced in v4.10. Users might see a small power saving if the discrete GPU is in use and its HDA controller is not, because the HDA controller is now allowed to runtime

[PATCH v2 0/7] Modernize vga_switcheroo by using device link for HDA
Modernize vga_switcheroo by using a device link to enforce a runtime PM dependency from an HDA controller to the GPU it's integrated into, v2. Changes since v1: - Replace patch [1/7] to use pci_save_state() / pci_restore_state() for consistency between runtime PM code path of bound and unbound devices. (Rafael, Bjorn) - Patch [5/7]: Drop an unnecessary initialization. (Bjorn) Rephrase

[PATCH v2 0/6] powerpc: queued spinlocks and rwlocks
v2 is updated to account for feedback from Will, Peter, and Waiman (thank you), and trims off a couple of RFC and unrelated patches. Thanks, Nick Nicholas Piggin (6): powerpc/powernv: must include hvcall.h to get PAPR defines powerpc/pseries: move some PAPR paravirt functions to their own file powerpc: move spinlock implementation to simple_spinlock powerpc/64s: implement queued

[PATCH v4 0/6] powerpc: queued spinlocks and rwlocks
Updated with everybody's feedback (thanks all), and more performance results. What I've found is I might have been measuring the worst load point for the paravirt case, and by looking at a range of loads it's clear that queued spinlocks are overall better even on PV, doubly so when you look at the generally much improved worst case latencies. I have defaulted it to N even though

[PATCH 0/8] powerpc: queued spinlocks and rwlocks
This series adds an option to use queued spinlocks for powerpc, and makes it the default for the Book3S-64 subarch. This effort starts with the generic code so it's very simple but still very performant. There are optimisations that can be made to slowpaths, but I think it's better to attack those incrementally if/when we find things, and try to add the improvements to generic code as
