Powell's unconstrained derivative-free nonlinear least squares routine, VA05AD
I have used Mike Powell's optimization routine (VA05AD) from the Harwell Subroutine Library (HSL) for more than 20 years. It is no exaggeration to say that it has helped make my career (thanks Mike). I recently learned that I am not alone in this respect - apparently it still has a loyal following in all sorts of fiel...

minimization using Powell's method without derivative
...er and Mead method
implemented in function optim and it does not work well. I also tried
the quasi Newton method in optim using difference as approximate
derivative. It does not work well either. I just went through Numerical
Recipes book. The book discusses another method without derivative
called Powell's method which should work better based on my
understanding. But optim does not have this routine in it. Does anyone
have an R callable implementation for this method? Thank you very much
in advance.

flac worse than shorten
...9;ll see
> what I mean).
Sorry, I don't :( I've split into individual files and found that shorten
compresses some files better and flac others. However, in total shorten
does better. I was just a little surprised, because I thought flac would
always out perform shorten?
Cheers.

Bug with FLAC raw encoding

that I can't get at in a future OS :( I already can't under FreeBSD. I
just put support in there for Windows weenies :) that don't look that far.
Flac rocks. The biggest bugbear for me is the speed, but I know that's a
lot of work to sort.

Dear list members
I would like to apply a vector of labels

to a dataframe
df=data.frame(1:3,1:3,1:3)
using some kind of loop or apply function.
Any ideas?

both install an R package and one or more dependencies that must be
separately obtained and licensed. One such situation is where a new

wanted to verify if this were useful before we considered distribution,
and Powell had been offering copies of his code on request. Thus we
could experiment, but not redistribute. Recently Powell's approval to
redistribute has been obtained.

FLAC status
...he files I
processed are:
wav shn flac
GB 8.54 5.51 5.11
% 100 64.5 59.8
Extrapolating that over the ~41GB, means it looks like FLAC will save me
~2GB over shorten.
BTW That's shorten 3.1 which puts the seek tables on the end of the .shn
files. Are the .flac files seekable?
Cheers.

And indeed, when I try to run a regression using that formula, it
appears to not contain any lags or logs (output below).
Any ideas? Thanks in advance,
