RFC for package PopCon: a popularity contest for R and packages
Hello all, I've developed a prototype package called PopCon (short for popularity contest), a package for tracking the popularity of R and its packages. I'd like this work to be similar in spirit to the Debian package popularity-contest: http://popcon.debian.org/. Once Popcon is loaded, it captures two kinds of information from the user and stores...

RFC for package PopCon: a popularity contest for R and packages
(I posted this to the R-devel list yesterday, but I thought others on this list would be interested, so sorry for those who get it twice.) I'd like this work to be similar in spirit to the Debian package popularity-contest: http://popcon.debian.org/. Once Popcon is loaded, it captures two kinds of information from the user and stores...

[OT] How many useRs?
I figured the devel list would have people on it who might know the answer to this.... Is there a reliable (for some definition of reliable) estimate of how many people use R or have downloaded it? Say an order of magnitude estimate? I would like to mention this in the introduction to a paper I'm writing where I encourage R's use. Thanks for any help. -Andy

limit pop login per user and per minute
Hi, like I have written in the subject line I want to limit the pop login per user and per minute. Currently I am having several customers which are fetching their email with popcon (MS Exchange). This has never been a problem. But... They all have got the same "technician" which take care of their systems. The problem is, that he misconfigured the servers of these customers. In detail: their servers are trying to fetch email every 2 - 5 seconds. For every email ad...

...libvirt. The systemd machine ID. SSH hostkey and SSL private key. The RNG seed. The various places where the hostname is written to during software installation. The inode generation IDs, depending on the filesystem. Other things that are created depending on the machine and OS? such as the Debian popcon host ID, even. The effort to clean/regenerate these and possibly more, which, in addition, often needs new per-machine random bytes introduced, is more than just installing fresh machines all the time, especially if you script that (in which I personally even consider moving a? way from d-i with p...

popular R packages
I would like to get some idea of which R-packages are popular, and what R is used for in general. Are there any statistics available on which R packages are downloaded often, or is there something like a package-survey? Something similar to http://popcon.debian.org/ maybe? Any tips are welcome! ----- Jeroen Ooms * Dept. of Methodology and Statistics * Utrecht University Visit http://www.jeroenooms.com www.jeroenooms.com to explore some of my current projects. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/popular-R-packages-tp...

R crashes with debug()
I know this may be a pathological case, but I found it while debugging PopCon: Invoking a debugged function prior to the conclusion of setup_Rmainloop() will cause R to crash because R_ConsoleIob is not initialized until run_Rmainloop(). Tested in R-2-6-branch and trunk on Linux. Crash it like this from a shell command line: $ cat >> ~/.Rprofile <<EOF foo &...

Evidence from Debian's package tracking (Was Re: Size of R user base.)
...size of the R user base with much interest. One more source of data that might help is the voluntary data capture in Debian. If you are a Debian user, you should volunteer information. It's very easy: as root, say: # apt-get install popularity-contest The results are found at: http://popcon.debian.org/main/math/by_inst This shows that of the 4800 people who volunteered information, 1631 had installed gnuplot -- which suggests that perhaps one third of Debian installs are by numerate people. R-base was installed by roughly one-tenth of the sample. So that's one useful fact: Rough...

ICU
I've just been looking at ICU with an eye to reworking the unicode queryparser patch to use it. A few things have jumped out so far which make we wonder if it's the best option. I don't really know what the alternatives are though (currently QueryParser uses glib's unicode routines). The first is that there seems to be bad version skew. Ubuntu breezy (the latest release) has

ssh host keys on cloned virtual machines
Hi list members, does any one of you have a best practice on renewing ssh host keys on cloned machines? I have a customer who never thought about that, while cloning all VMs from one template. Now all machines have the exact same host key. My approach would be to store a machines MAC address(es). Then when starting the sshd.service, check if this MAC has changed. If so, remove all host keys, let

That's what the "sysprep" procedure is for when generating reference VM images, and "cloud-utils" for setting up new VMs from images, at least for Linux and Windows and MacOS. I've no idea if OpenBSD has a similar utility, I've never tried to cloud or...
