Upgrade 4.7 > 5.3 poorer 'performance'
Hi
During a test upgrade of a number of hosts in a pool i have found that
exactly the same JVM based app runs more efficiently on the 4.7 systems
than it does on the 5.3 on identical hardware.
Specifically the apps seems to exhibit about 10% more 'load' on the
CPU's for the same workload - before i start digging deep has anyone
seen anything similar ?
thanks

Poor gsm playback
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I've have installed a new Asterisk 1.4.15 system after having previously
used a 1.2 CVS head (from 10 Sep 2005). Both systems are pentiums though
the newer one is actually a slower processor.
On the new system, playback of gsm files is noticeably poorer (voice
quality is flakely) on any connected phone (sip or isdn, internal or
external).
Prompts recorded in sln are very clear quality as are voicemail recorded
in wav. Call quality is also good.
"core show translation" show "gsm=>other format" times are similar to

Increasing NFS Performance
...ving up content to several other hosts via NFS. The amount of data transferred is rather small as most of the files are under 100kb and each export has maybe 100 files that are accessed regularly. I'm finding that as I add more hosts accessing the NFS server, the performance seems to be getting poorer. There are obvious delays when doing simple 'ls' on an NFS mounted directory.
The mounts are all done on the local LAN (100mbit FDX), all on the same broadcast domain, no routing. One of the clients is a physical CentOS 5 node, the rest (5-6 total) are OpenVZ containers also running CentOS...

Question from XM Radio
Thanks for the reply. We are currently using AMBE (4Kbps) for our Traffic/Weather Channels. If you have ever had a chance to hear the service, you will know that AMBE does not do us well.
I understand that 2Kbps is low quality, but any poorer than AMBE?
If can get a decent quality for other low bandwidth talk channels, such as about 10-16Kbps and have it sound rather clean, then I would be gaining a bit of growth in the areas I'm seeking.
None of this would be Music, understand. Music needs it's bandwidth... just voice only...

Making TIFF images with rtiff
...hers require that images, whether
photographs or line art, be submitted as high resolution .TIFF images.
One option for R users is to produce an image in one format and to
convert it to a .TIFF file using a second software program. My
experience has been that this option often results in images of poorer
quality, often with blurry contours, and a loss of resolution. A second
and better option would be to make .TIFF files directly from the graphic
output of R.
I recently noticed that there is a library called "rtiff" that may be
able to do this. However, I have not been able to get it...

a question about diparate device quality
List,
I have a question about why plots sent to certain devices can be of so much
worse quality than others. Whenever I plot to x11 or pdf the graphs are of
excellent quality. eps is a bit poorer, but of passable quality, and jpeg
or tiff are terrible. I tried all manner of parameters, on many versions
of R (most major releases from about 2.2 - present) under linux and windows
and on a few different (pc) hardware setups and this patterns seems to be
invariant. Could anyone explain why thi...

inbound calls better quality than outbound calls on X100P
I have a strange problem in that when I receive a call through the X100P
which is forwarded to my budgetone 100 then the voice quality is perfect
both directions. However, if I make a call out from the budgetone to the
same caller via the X100P the sound level is a lot lower and the quality a
lot poorer. I've had to set the rx tx gain to 1.5 or I can hardly hear at
all.
Any ideas what is wrong, I'm using the latest zaptel and asterisk from the
cvs head as of today.

does --whole-file always work?
Hi,
Running rsync with --whole-file yields poorer performance results than a
simple "cp".
Looking at the code - it looks like "copy_file" isn't really called when I
add the --whole-file flag. The regular "receive_data" is doing the copy.
Anyone encountered this? No other special flags (rsync --whole-file -av

streaming to dialup users gives low quality audio

already. IMHO, 40kbps would probably be your absolute top for a 56k modem.
If you want to be accessible to 33.6/28.8k modems, don't go any higher than
24kbps.
At this rate, you hit the stereo vs mono argument. If you want clearer
audio, go mono. But if you want stereo, you'll have poorer audio.
In my experience, you can get acceptable audio at 24kbps mono with 22.05kHz
or 24kbps stereo with 11.025kHz. Note that these aren't the LAME default
sampling rates for these bit rates.
If you want to go 40kbps, some quick informal testing gives the following
results:
Stereo: LAME...

Re: more PO files available at the TP

messages out 1305.
Eperanto has gotten better; it's now up to 499 / 1305.
Ukranian is pretty new, but it's actually in pretty good shape; 1055 /
1305.
It seems to me that if a message catalog has only 5% of the messages
translated, including them is very likely to result in a poorer user
experience than if everything was left in English.

more PO files available at the TP
Hi,
At the translationproject there are four more languages available
than are included in the 1.42.10 tarball: Danish, Esperanto, Malay,
and Ukrainian. Please include these in your next release.
Attached patch adds the missing language codes to the po/LINGUAS
file. The easiest way to fetch the missing files (and the latest
updates) is to run:

streaming to dialup users gives low quality audio
Hello,
I've got two streams, one for broadband, one for dialup. Well, having
had occation to use a dialup connection recently i checked the dialup
stream. Although it was streaming what the broadband stream was, the audio
quality was audibly worse. It didn't buffer, but it didn't sound as clear as
the broadband stream. I used lame to encode the tracks to mp3 and used it's

SIP trunk gives fuzzy / distorted audio on mobiles, OK on fixed lines
I'm having a problem with a new SIP trunk.
Calls within the UK to fixed lines are fine, but calls to mobiles have
noticeably poorer audio quality.
I thought it might have been a codec issue; we have used G.726 for internal
and external calls (over primary ISDN and GSM). So I tried allowing "alaw",
(G.711 A-law) which is the native codec used within the PSTN in this country,
but this made no improvement.

ESXi, KVM or Xen?
...ts where I'd been advised
not to use the CentOS xen kernel if not using xen virtualization.
KVM would be ideal since it's opensource and would be supported in
CentOS as far as can be reasonably foreseen. However, looking at
available resources, it seems to have these key disadvantages
1. Poorer performance under load.
http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/Open_Topics_For_Discussion?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=Quantitative+Comparison+of+Xen+and+KVM.pdf
This 2008 XenSummit paper indicates that it dies on heavy network load
as well as when there are more than a few VM doing heavy pro...

Windows2000 policies in a Samba PDC
...thout installing and
configuring a W2k server and replacing it with Samba afterwards, so
Where are my assumptions wrong?
What is the best way for getting feature-rich W2k policies in a Samba PDC
without installing a W2k server?
Should I resign myself to using WinNT profiles (that are poorer but easier
to create)?
Thanks a lot, I promise I will write a Spanish howto explaining everything.
PD.- Sorry about my poor English writing.

Anyway to ensure SSH availability?
I was having problems with the same server locking up to the point I
can't even get in via SSH. I've already used HTB/TC to reserve
bandwidth for my SSH port but the problem now isn't an attack on the
bandwidth. So I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to ensure that
SSH is given cpu and i/o priority.
However, so far reading seems to imply that it's probably not going
