Hz vs bitrate?
the Vorbis FAQ says: "mid to high quality (8kHz-48.0kHz, 16+ bit, polyphonic) audio and music at fixed and variable bitrates from 16 to 128 kbps/channel." What is the difference between Hz and bitrate? Doesn't MP3 support higher bitrates? Pointers for more reading are welcome.

Computing fundamental harmonics from a periodogram
Dear all, I'm trying to finding the fundamental harmonics (ie. peaks in a periodogram) from a time series (extracted from an mp3). For example, if I look at spectrum(fdeaths, spans = c(3,3)) I'd say the fundamental harmonics are about 1, 2, 3.5 and 4.5 - but how can I extract these automatically? (preferably with some heuristic for choosing the smoothing spans too) I'm aware of

WAVE Format info
At the risk of throwing more fuel on the fire, I found the following document on the Microsoft website. It appears to be the file format counterpart to the API documentation presented by Chris Wolf. I'm not familiar with the WAVE format, so I'll let you guys interpret it (or tell me it is irrelevant): http://www.microsoft.com/HWDEV/audio/multichaud.htm [As an aside: Why does Microsoft

Mono wavs with b4
When I encode a monophonic wav file, I would expect the resulting ogg file to be at about half the bit rate specified on the command line, as stated in the "oggenc -h" help text: "The 6 modes are approximately 112, 128, 160, 192, 256, and 350 kbps (for stereo 44.1kHz input. Halve these numbers for mono input).". This doesn't seem to be happening, though. I took a 16-bit,

Back-up connection
Some weeks ago, I asked if anyone had set up a backup scheme for a remote server. By backup here, I mean an alternative arrangement that can be called upon if eg the DSL connection to the remote machine fails. I received one interesting reply: ====================== At home, besides my fixed lines, I have two gsm-modems, one low-speed (that came free of charge with one of my fixed lines), the

Updated Vorbis-RTP Internet Draft
...the 1.0 encoder can encode high-quality CD and DAT rate stereo at below 48k bits/sec without resampling to a lower rate. Vorbis is also intended for lower and higher sample rates (from 8kHz telephony to 192kHz digital masters) and a range of channel representations (monaural, polyphonic, stereo, quadraphonic, 5.1, ambisonic, or up to 255 discrete channels). Vorbis encoded audio is generally encapsulated within an Ogg format bitstream [1], which provides framing and synchronization. For the purposes of RTP transport, this layer is unnecessary, and so raw Vorb...
