Neither the "usbmount" nor "pmount" packages are installed, but
"thunar-volman" is installed. I did install "pmount" only to find
that it appears to be meant to be invoked manually, so I un-
installed it again.

Well, that's interesting, about making sure it's stopped. I've asked here

it, and walked downstairs, mostly, esp the green drives, were spun down. I
pumount... and *nothing* spins down. They stay spinning, which is obvious,

dumb question on permissions out of the box
Can someone explain to me the logic that I, as a user, cannot, by default,

Right. And I've only been doing systems administration for, um, 21 years,
so I'm not surprised I never heard of udiskctl, and only know mount (and,
only recently, pmount).

How to install programs in wine?
I am a rank newbie to Linux and wine.
I am running Ubuntu Dapper on an AMD 1800 mhz machine, wine 0.9.15
Everything I have read says use the installer to load windows programs.
Where is the installer?
Thanks,
