ZFS/iSCSI target integration
Rick McNeal and I have been working on building support for sharing ZVOLs as iSCSI targets directly into ZFS. Below is the proposal I''ll be submitting to PSARC. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Adam ---8<--- iSCSI/ZFS Integration A. Overview The goal of this project is to couple ZFS with the iSCSI target in Solaris specifically to make it as easy to create and export ZVOLs

SunFire X2100 bios dislikes ZFS''s EFI labels, too
Back in December, there was some discussion here about the Ultra 20''s bios being confused by the EFI labels ZFS uses. After seeing a report about the X2100 exhibiting the same behavior as the Ultra 20, I reproduced the problem and filed: 6407133 X2100 bios intimidated by ZFS-created EFI labels hopefully that bios will get fixed, too. - Bill

Available space confusion
I recently created a raidz of four 2TB-disks and moved a bunch of movies onto them. And then I noticed that I''ve somehow lost a full TB of space. Why? nebol at filez:/$ zfs list tank2 NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT tank2 3.12T 902G 32.9K /tank2 nebol at filez:/$ zpool list tank2 NAME SIZE USED AVAIL CAP HEALTH ALTROOT tank2 5.44T 4.18T 1.26T 76% ONLINE -

zfs inotify?
OK, so this may be a little off-topic, but here goes: The reason I switched to OpenSolaris was primarily to take advantage of ZFS''s features when storing my digital imaging collection. I switched from a pretty stock Linux setup, but it left me at one disadvantage. I had been using inotify under Linux to trigger a series of Ruby scripts that would do all the basic ingestion/setup for

How to destroy your system in funny way with ZFS
Hi all, I installed another OpenSolaris (snv_129) in VirtualBox 3.1.0 on Windows because snv_130 doesn''t boot anymore after installation of VirtualBox guest additions. Older builds before snv_129 were running fine too. I like some features of this OS, but now I end with something funny. I installed default snv_129, installed guest additions -> reboot, set

ZFS system requirements
Hi, this says that opensolaris only requires 512MB ram: http://dlc.sun.com/osol/docs/content/IPS/sysreq.html This says 1GB ram and a 64bit processor are recommended: http://www.solarisinternals.com/wiki/index.php/ZFS_Best_Practices_Guide#Memory_and_Swap_Space Am I going to have problems if I run opensolaris and zfs at the minimum requirements? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

Performance with Sun StorageTek 2540
Under Solaris 10 on a 4 core Sun Ultra 40 with 20GB RAM, I am setting up a Sun StorageTek 2540 with 12 300GB 15K RPM SAS drives and connected via load-shared 4Gbit FC links. This week I have tried many different configurations, using firmware managed RAID, ZFS managed RAID, and with the controller cache enabled or disabled. My objective is to obtain the best single-file write performance.

gzip compression throttles system?
I just had a quick play with gzip compression on a filesystem and the result was the machine grinding to a halt while copying some large (.wav) files to it from another filesystem in the same pool. The system became very unresponsive, taking several seconds to echo keystrokes. The box is a maxed out AMD QuadFX, so it should have plenty of grunt for this. Comments? Ian

Intel Entry Storage System SS4200-E
Hey ! I just spotted that Intel'' upcoming box "Helena Island"[0] With its 64bit capable Celeron 420 should be very good material for building ZFS box for home usage. [0] http://mswhs.com/2007/10/05/more-info-intel-entry-storage-system-ss4200-e/ -- Regards, Cyril

Nice chassis for ZFS server
Hi, I just came across this box [0] (McKay Creek). Seems to be exceptional building material for ZFS based NAS/iSCSI unit. I especially liked the two extra system disks hidden inside the box ! Any one have an experience with these ? [0] http://www.intel.com/design/servers/storage/ssr212mc2 -- Regards, Cyril
