Aligning aerial photographs and maps
I have read in Paul Murrell's book R Graphics about how to use a bitmap as background for a plot (page 107). Also, I routinely use function read.shape() in package maptools to read maps in shapefile format. Now, I would like to overlay an aerial photograph in .jpg format and a map. I think I could do the alignment manually for each case, but wonder if there is a better, automated way. I notice

Acer Aspire Photographer in need of expert help
...ross my message that I am a COMPLETE novice with Linux. I can't understand the terminology. I have received advice and questions about "which file manager do you have?" "changing distros" "reloading with ubuntu" "joining a Linux forum " etc etc But I am a photographer not a computer expert. I didn?t even realise the machine was Linux not Windows XP!!! Does anyone know of a SIMPLE way to view (slide show +magnification would be wonderful if possible) Canon .CR2 FILES.I do not need to edit or process them, as I do this "back at the ranch" with Photoshop....

graphs superimposed on pictures?
Hi: I am doing some work that involves plotting points of interest superimposed on photographs and maps. I can produce the plots fine in R, but so far I have had to do the superimposition externally, which makes it tedious to do exploratory work. I have looked to see if there is some capability to put a background picture on a plot window, but I have not found anything. Advice, anyone? Cheers

Rails 3.1, SASS, @import, and directories
So, here''s the problem: @import isn''t liking other directories. Example: app/ assets/ stylesheets/ extras/ _mixins.sass _variables.sass photographs/ index.css.sass And the contents of app/assets/stylesheets/photographs/index.css.sass is: @import "../extras/mixins", "../extras/variables" I get the following

resolution (dpi) problem
I am using R 2.4.1 with Windows XP. I use the plot command in a fairly simple script and I use the right mouse click on the plot and save as a postscript file. I used the resultant file in a paper which was submitted electronically. However, I get the following response from the journal: Your manuscript has been unsubmitted because you failed to meet the submission guidelines as indicated

ImageMagick : Centos GUI ?
I accidentally discovered 'convert'. It is a command line utility. Changing a file from png to gif works like this convert aaa.png aaa.gif Amazingly simple, powerful and effective. I've since discovered it has an amazing list of options convert --help a manual file:///usr/share/doc/ImageMagick-6.2.8/www/convert.html and a web site http://www.imagemagick.org/ Does anyone

Using an image background with graphics
I would like to use a map or aerial photo as a background to plotting solid lines and text, and semi-transparent color contours, in base and lattice graphics. Plot coordinates need to be consistent with the georeferenced background. For example, a color contour plot would have an gray-toned aerial photograph as a background for overprinted semi-transparent color contours of some spatially

Which file system to use for a USB backup
I have some photographs on my Centos 4 server that I want to copy to a USB drive. However, I want to be able to access the files from Windows or Mac OS's. Where should I look for instructions on how to mount and format the USB drive and is FAT32 the only option? Many thanks -- Ariste Software Petaluma, CA 94952 http://www.aristesoftware.com

Quadrat counting with spatstat
I have photographs of plots that look like so: http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/file/n4631960/Untitled.jpg I need to divide it up so each circle has an equal area surrounding it. So into 20 equal segments, each of which contains a circle. Quadratcount is not sufficient because if I divide it up into 36 equal quadrats, some quadrats do not contain one of the circles. I'm not even sure how to

Making TIFF images with rtiff
Many medical journals and publishers require that images, whether photographs or line art, be submitted as high resolution .TIFF images. One option for R users is to produce an image in one format and to convert it to a .TIFF file using a second software program. My experience has been that this option often results in images of poorer quality, often with blurry contours, and a loss of
