MANOVA power, degrees of freedom, and RAO's paradox
Hi, I have a nested unbalanced data set of four correlated variables. When I do univariate analyses, my factor of interest is significant or marginally significant with all of the variables. Small effect size but always in the same direction. If I do a MANOVA instead (because the variables are not independent!) then my factor is far from being significant. How does that come about? I have

???UNSURE??? Re: (PR#8363) R CMD INSTALL fails if cd prints
...onlinepubs/009695399/utilities/cd.html How old are `older SunOSes'? Solaris 8 (which is 4 years old) is POSIX-compilant here, and I would be surprised if any from the last decade was not (at least with suitable paths set). > probably more a matter of style, more than anything else. Our philosphy is to assume that the users tools are standard (e.g. POSIX) unless there is widespread evidence to the contrary. First off, we need to know what was done and to be able to reproduce it. -- Brian D. Ripley, ripley at stats.ox.ac.uk Professor of Applied Statistics, http://www.s...

...8 (which is 4 years old) is > POSIX-compilant here, and I would be surprised if any from the last decade > was not (at least with suitable paths set). SunOS 5.7 (which admittedly is ancient; I can't find the year, google.com is currently unreachable for me) doesn't do it. > Our philosphy is to assume that the users tools are standard (e.g. POSIX) > unless there is widespread evidence to the contrary. The INSTALL.in script already contains various '> /dev/null'; my patch just adds another two, inside the get_packages function, just to avoid any output that the cd...

R 0.99.0a for Ms Windows (9X/NT)
A binary distribution of R 0.99.0a is available from http://www.r-project.org/bin/windows/windows-NT/base Pre-compiled packages for this version are now available from the Windows contrib area on CRAN (http://www.r-project.org/bin/windows/windows-NT/contrib). In many cases a new version is needed, and all have been rebuilt using the latest improvements in the help conversion. All the changes

Date vs date (long)
...ntrolling response: what good did the "not legal" message do me? There are of course many cases where an error message is the only choice, because I can't see what to do with either the number or the attribute, e.g. date + string. The key question is then "what is the right philosphy", flexible tool or rigorous control? Rigorous control languages have not fared well historically. 3 Hard cases The hardest are cases where the right return value is unclear. An example is (date + 1.73) : should one return a true date, which is integer, allow an invalid internal value tha...
