3 simple questions
Hi. I am running 3.0.20.
1. I would like to have an include statement pointing to user
configurations. For a user, say 'mike', the following works:
include = /home/mike/smb.conf
But this does not:
include = /home/%u/smb.conf
I am using a very simple config with 'security = user'. What am I doing
wrong?
I cannot get any log feedback from this ('testparm' says

Help understanding rsync and cwrsync
Hi all, we are just beginning to dive into rsync. I have limited
experience with just playing around with the examples and reading all
the docs that I can. I just read an interesting post from a developer
that mentions cwrsync is a minimalistic rsync and thus things like
permissions are not transfered, the post was from 2004. Here are my

a few basic questions
Hi folks. Running rsync on Slackware. I'm going over the man pages yet
some aspects remain murky. Hopefully someone can set me straight.
1. The --rsh option,
The man page explains that you can invoke a single-transfer daemon if you
want some features that a daemon provides:
$ rsync -av --rsh=ssh host::module /dest
The it says that you need to slap on an ssh user if the daemon/module

preventing rsync transfers
I sync some client stations to a central server at the discretion of the
users. They run a single-transfer daemon by logging in via their ssh
accounts. All is well.
Now I also allow a certain user to rsync this accumulated client data
(which end up as subdirectories of a single directory on the server) to an
external hard drive. This user connects via ssh and runs a remote shell
script on the

"file has vanished" Chinese characters...
Hi gang. I am running cwRsync on Windows XP systems and synching to a
FreeBSD server. One user uses unicode because he needs Chinese
characters. During a synchronization I get many "file has vanished"
messages; the filename contains question marks. Is there any way to
deal with this?

hiding dot files and the printer
Hi. Running Samba 3.0.20 on Slackware 10.2.
I cannot hide my unix dot files (.bash_history) using the 'hide files' or
'veto files' settings:
hide files = /.*/ { or just .* }
Also, how do I get rid of the printer folder in the top level of my share?

LDAP, tdbsam, and profiles
I have a new PDC ready to replace an older one (which is using LDAP
locally). The new one will be using tdbsam.
I plan to first change LDAP on the existing system to the tdbsam
backend and ensure proper functioning. I understand I can use the
pdbedit tool to make this change. Comments?
At this point I would like to ask how profiles (which will be stored
locally on the clients) will be

danger in using pdbedit
I would like to be able to change between backends but I'm worried that
my users will encounter trouble loggin in. So I'm looking for
reassurance that my command is ok.
My current configuration is:
passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://10.10.10.10 smbpasswd guest
I would like to change from ldap to tdbsam. Is this the command to
use:
# pdbedit -i ldapsam:ldap://10.10.10.10 -e tdbsam

question re multiple backends and the 'guest' backend
An inherited system has the following configuration:
passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://10.10.10.10 smbpasswd guest
What is the purpose of using multiple backends? The smb.conf man page
simply states that each backend will be searched in turn but why would
one ever use such a setup?
Secondly, the man page does not mention the 'guest' backend. To me
such a backend implies that an

rsync ok with open files?
Hi gang. I am synchronizing Windows machines (cwRsync/cygwin) with
FreeBSD server. A batch file is used to initiate the process (shell
invoked rsync daemon). My question is whether I need to tell my users
to close any affected applications (ex: Outlook; I am synchronizing the
outlook.pst file) during the procedure?

requesting assistance in samba-samba migration
I have inherited a Samba server and would like to migrate the
installation to a new machine. We are using Samba as a PDC and my
currrent worry is what users will see on their desktop (as well as
other changes?) once they log on to the new server.
As a test I have logged on with my laptop (running WinXP virtually) and
I get a completely blank desktop (with the exception of the trash can).
