Cannot re-make a software raid pair
...I have run fdisk on hdg and created the same partition structure as had and changed their types to 'fd' but when I try and rebuild the array I get: mdadm /dev/md0 -a /dev/hdg1 mdadm: hot add failed for /dev/hdg1: Invalid argument If I look at /var/log/messages, I have: Oct 5 16:04:39 petdoctors kernel: md: could not bd_claim hdg1. Oct 5 16:04:39 petdoctors kernel: md: error, md_import_device() returned -16 >From other postings, this seems to imply the hdg1 partition is mounted but I can find no evidence of this (df or cat /proc/mounts or lsof). I have done sone googling and found oth...

Chrooting SFTP over SSH2
Hi, As per the subject line - if I look up setting up chroot jails for SFTP over SSH2 I'm led to various Web sites and patches and also to a CentOS wiki page dated 2005, but what's the 'best' or 'correct' way to set this up for Centos 4.5 and 5? Thanks

CentOS newbie just saying hello
Hi folks, Just a quick hello having installed CentOS on my first box - an Acer Altos G310 (P4 2.8GHz, 768MB RAM with 70GB + 300GB storage. The 300GB unit is a SATA disk which I hope to software (hardware!?) mirror - if I'm in for any major fun mirroring a SATA drive do let me know now - I think hardware mirroring is not an option (yet!?) but I haven't checked this out completely. This

Re: Slashdot: "Could Microsoft buy Red Hat?" -- this is a joke made by the clueless
From: Nigel Kendrick <support-lists at petdoctors.co.uk> > Sorry if it wraps: > http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/05/16/1758249&tid=109&tid=163&tid=110&tid=98&tid=218 This has _nothing_ to do with Microsoft possibly buying Red Hat. People who even suggest this only expose their *0* understanding of business....

Samba print queues showing old jobs
We have a server running Centos-3 with all latest updates. The server hosts 3 printers for us which are accessed by various Windows clients. About 3 months ago we noticed that, after a cups update, if you looked at the print queues in Windows they would show old jobs that had long been printed. After a further cups update this quirk went away but it's just come backs again - possibly after

Disk problem has stopped 'df' from working
Hi folks, probably not CentOS specific but any help appreciated: One of our CentOS4 servers crashed and when checked there was a disk problem which turned out to be a faulty SATA cable on one of the RAID 1 drives. This was sorted and the server brought back up after the usual disk checks and all has been well for the last week. Today, however, I tried 'df -h' and got: Filesystem

Turning root partition into a RAID array
I have a CentOS 4.2 system that was set up VERY quickly following the demise of its former life as a CentOS 3 server - you don't want the full story, but it had to be done quickly to get a company up and working following a slight disaster involving an electrician, a portable appliance safety tester and a pulled power cable - anyway, here's where I am at... Everything is running fine but

Copying user accounts (passwords) to another server
Hi Folks, I am doing a server swap out tomorrow and wondered if there was a utility that will copy user account details and their current passwords from one server to another (both CentOS 4) - there's only about 15 to do so it's not a major issue. Thanks Nigel Kendrick

Copying files from DOS environment based on archive bit
Hi Folks, I've a Linux server that has a disk on a Windows NT-based machine mounted via samba so that it appears as /share/pd on the Linux box. I am trying to automate a backup procedure that pushes files from the NT disk to another site as a ZIP file using scp. All is working OK, but I'd now like to make the backup 'incremental' so can anyone think of a way I can grab files off

CentOS4 and SiS190 LAN chipset
I have an Asus Pundit AE3 setup as an Asterisk server (Asterisk at Home) and the only quirk so far is that the onboard SiS190 LAN chipset is not detected and so I have fitted a full height card for now, but as it's a small barebones design this means I cannot fit the case cover. I have the option of throwing in a low-profile LAN card or compiling the OS/drivers - I have looked into this but it

Vacation program
Is anyone else running the 'vacation' mail forwarder on Centos 3? When I 'make install' I get the following error: strip: /usr/bin/vaclook: File format not recognized When I try and use vacation (with postfix), it 'goes through the motions' but inbound mail bounces with <nkendrick at munged.home.local>: Command died with status 1: "/usr/bin/vacation -a

RE: Vacation forwarder - syntax of .forward file - FIXED
Sorted!! Looks like I started to play around with my user account while still logged in as root, and .vacation.db in my home directory was owned by root:root - changing it to nkendrick:root has fixed the problem. Regards, Nigel

OT: P4 Vs Xeon for Linux
I have just had delivered a new HP Proliant server and it is based on an Intel Xeon 2.8GHz processor. On site already we have an Acer Altos G310 with a P4 2.8GHz processor. The new HP server was destined for another site with about 30 persons to service some simple file and print sharing and to manage their email (postfix + MailScanner). The Acer is hosting our Intranet, file and print sharing

**££!!*** Proliant!
This Proliant (ml330 G3) has an HP CSB-6 (LSI/Megaraid) disk controller that isn't recognised by the installer. A quick search on Google reveals drivers from RH7 - AS2.1 but nothing for 3 or 4 unless anyone knows different!? If not I'll just have to disable it and install a supported RAID card. Anyone!? Nigel

APM on SMP kernel
I'm Currently running Centos 3.4 on an old Dell PowerEdge with dual PIII-450 processors. I know from searching that 'APM is not SMP safe' and so when I choose to reboot the server someone has to hit the power button to power down and then restart it. Most of the Web-based info I have found on APM and SMP is dated 2000-2002 so can anyone update me on whether there is now any way
