Wide confidence intervals or Error message in a mixed effects model (nlme)
I am analyzing a dataset on the effects of six pesticides on population
growth rate of a predatory mite. The response variable is the population
growth rate of the mite (ranges from negative to positive) and the
exploratory variable is a categorical variable (treatment). The
experiment was blocked in time (3 blocks / replicates per block) and it
is unbal...

residuals in lmer
Does anyone know how to extract residuals in lmer?
Here's the error I get:
>
crop.lme=lmer(response~variety*irrigation*pesticide+(1|rep)+(1|rep:
pesticide)+(1|rep:pesticide:irrigation), crop.data)
> qqnorm(crop.lme)
Error in qqnorm.default(crop.lme) : y is empty or has only NAs
> resid(crop.lme)
NULL
Thanks!

Analysis of unbalanced data in nlme or car
I am analyzing a dataset on the effects of six pesticides on population
growth rate of a predatory mite. The response variable is the population
growth rate of the mite expressed as ln(Nfinal/Nstarting) of the mite,
where N final the population of the mite at the end of the experiment
and N starting the population of the mite at the beginning of the
expe...

analysing a three level reponse
...time ago, so the data is as it is,
and I know it isn't perfect!).
A brief description of the experiment follows:
Pots of grass were grown in 1l pots of standad potting medium for 1
month with a regular light and watering regime. At this point they were
randomly given 1l of one of 4 different pesticides at one of 4 different
concentrations (100%, 75%, 50% or 25% in water). There were 20 pots of
grass for each pesticide/concentration giving 320 pots. There were no
control (untreated) pots. The response was measured after 1 week and
recorded as either:
B1 - grass dead
B2 - grass affected but not de...

R kudos
This is not a request for help, but I thought the readers of this mailing
list might appreciate the following, anyway. I have been working with US
EPA's (that's the United States Environmental Protection Agency) Office of
Pesticides on a preliminary assessment for the effects of exposure to
multiple organophosphate pesticides on human health (as required by the
Food Quality Protection Act). This is a particularly high profile
activity, and requires external review, conducted by a panel of scientists
from relevant disciplines...

Better, I'd like to put in such a legend a new item whose color

Some additional attacks on Cookie Session
Aside from the replay attacks discussed, there are some other attack
vectors on the cookie_session store.
I appreciate (and admire!) Jeremy''s good humor on all of this:

Anyway, here''s what we came up with:
1. Brute Force
SHA512 can be computed _very_ fast. On my Pentium Core Duo:
irb> z = ''z'' * 100; puts Benchmark.measure { 1000.times
{ Digest::SHA512.hexdigest(z) }}

Research Assistant/Staff Scientist: Technology in Environmental Health (Boston, MA)
...eam of
environmental health scientists, social scientists, and human-computer
interaction experts is designing a digital interface that we expect will
become the standard for reporting results in biomonitoring and
exposure studies. We will first develop and test the interface for
reporting personal pesticide exposures to residents of Boston public
housing.
Responsibilities: This position requires versatility in support of
the Institute?s transdisciplinary research. It reports to the
executive director and affords a bird?s-eye-view of research in human
computer interaction, environmental health science...

Justifying R to anti open-source management
Hi
I apologise for this question as it really must be a FAQ. Unfortunately,
I can't find the answer and I'm tired of looking at endless google results
A colleague of mine works for a state government department that has a
policy against open source software or software tainted by open
source. Other government departments in the same state use R but this
particular department is driven
