how do i persuade IT to install R on PCs ?? ...and should I ??
Please help me persuade IT to install R on my computer! All suggestions welcome. Our IT department run scared when you mention software that they have no working experience of. I need to know the pros and cons of having R on corporate desktops. Please no funny stuff, this is quite a serious issue for us. Pros and cons would be good. Thanks. -- View this message in context:

persuade tabulate function to count NAs in a data frame
Hi, I'd like to ask you a question again. It is basically about data frames, NAs and tabulate function. I have this data frame. I already used this in one of the previous questions of mine. It intentionally looks this simple, my real 'df' dataframe is much bigger actually and again, I am not willing to annoy anyone with huge databases... So, my database: id

exporting high quality graphics from R in Mac OSX
Hi there The default option for saving graphics from R (1.9.1) on my Mac is as a pdf file. If I open the file in Acrobat reader it looks really good and crisp, and is obviously saved as vector graphics, since I can zoom in as much as I like and it continues to look really nice. If I import it into MS Word (from office 2000), or Textedit, however, it imports it as a bitmap and unless I save

Who uses R?
Dear R users, I have started work in a Statistics government department and I am trying to convince my bosses to install R on our computers (I can't do proper stats in Excel!!). They asked me to prove that this is a widely used software (and not just another free-source, bug infected toy I found on the web!) by suggesting other big organisations that use it. Are you aware of any reputable

LVM VG disappears after kernel upgrade on 5.1
I finally got 5.1 to boot after install (install couldn't keep the disk IDs from getting crossed up, so at reboot partitions were not where install said they would be). I needed to compile vmware and nvidia modules, but decided to upgrade first. Told yumex to upgrade everything. When I went to reboot the VG with / on it is not seen by the kernel. (root partition is LVM on top of RAID

What the???? Is there a Doctor in the house? Help
Ok do not know what is causing this problem and would appreciate some help in tracking down the cause. FreeBSD 4.7 System runs fine for maybe a week and then all networking stops - without warning. I do not know anyway of persuading it to resume networking without rebooting. Does anyone have some useful suggestions on how to diagnose the cause? David

[LLVMdev] setting up LLVM to *run on* amd64 but *generate code* for alpha
I'm trying to persuade llvm (svn trunk) to build in a mode where it *runs on* amd64 but *generates code* for alpha, exclusively. (Well, technically, generate code for my experimental architecture simulator that happens to be based on alpha.) I have been unable to find any combination of configure switches that makes this happen. I should probably underline that I am _not_ trying to

cram-md5 and users maintaining their own passwords?
Is there any other mechanism than using passwd files with md5-hashed passwords created by dovecotpw that will support cram-md5 authentication? Has anyone created setups where the passwd databases reside in the individual users home directories? Is it possible to persuade dovecotpw to update the passwd databases automatically. Having to use a text editor to paste in the passwords sets a high

Knoppix won't let me write to emergency drive
I appear to have lost the whole of my home directory on my centos server (which includes all my mail saved from the last 7 years). Although I have recent backups of most data I would like to copy important files from /etc, and, if possible, /var/logs so that I can try to find out what went wrong. However, knoppix refuses to let me write to either my usb hdd or usb pendrive. Does anyone know how

[LLVMdev] "Name that compiler"
...or several years to come: For > example: "Use the Foo/LLVM Compiler System, it runs infinite loops faster > than the competition!". > How about Illuvium? It's pronounceable, it pays homage to "LLVM", and the domain's already taken by someone who might be persuaded to give it up :)

Installing rails without gems
...this might just be what a Pythonier as me needs to try out Ruby. :) Now the problem is, right now the computer where I want to play around with rails doesn''t have net access. I already downloaded the packages available in the rails web site. How can I install everything? Can ruby-gems be persuaded to install from the local disk? Thanks in advance, Paulo

potential wiki article on encryption
There is a posting in the CentOS forum that can potentially make a good article regarding encryption (or supplement the existing page). Please take a look at #4 of: http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?viewmode=flat&topic_id=15923&forum=42 The poster says, "I think that the contents of this document would make a good addition to the wiki, but I don't have the

Porting to Dynix 4.1.3...
Hello there, I am trying to build OpenSSH on the above (very old) version of unix. With a bit of hacking, I have managed to get everything to compile and run. Scp works fine however when I log in via ssh I end up with a session without a controlling terminal. I have followed the code in pty_make_controlling_tty and it seems to go as follows: 1. Starts with a controlling tty. 2. setsid works,

problem in reading large files
...ows, size of about 200MB). I used scan(), R 2.3.1 on Windows XP. My computer is AMD 2000+ and has 512MB ram. It sometimes freezes my PC, sometimes just shuts down R quitely. Is there a way (option, function) to better handle large files? Seemingly SAS can deal with it with no problem, but I just persuaded my professor transfering to R, so it is quite disappointing. Please help, thank you. [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

[LLVMdev] Performance Tracking
...to come fairly close, with no overall winner. But: there do seem to have been a number of performance regressions between 2.9 and 3.0: http://openbenchmarking.org/result/1110178-AR-1110173AR66 Identifying where these were introduced is quite difficult. I wonder if some of the buildbots could be persuaded, after building clang, to build and run some benchmark projects (e.g. perlbench, povray, flac / lame, whatever) and email people if they introduce a performance regression, just as the current buildbots email people who break the build. Citation for R
This is just a note that R would get a lot more citations if the recommended citation was an article in a recognised journal or from a recognised publisher. I use R in work leading to publications often, and I strongly want to give the R core team credit for their work. However I find that I can't persuade my biological collaborators to include the current R citation (below) in their

R in cron job: X problems
I'd like to use an R CMD BATCH script as part of a chron job that is set up to run every hour. The trouble is that the script creates a graphical output in a file via png(), and apparently this in turn works through X. When cron invokes the job, no X server is available -- I suppose that the DISPLAY variable is not set -- and so R exits with an error message in the output file. (If I run the

how to use if statement in function correctly

ATCom Phones - AT 510/AT530
...t; and so on? I'm not looking for a high-end phone here - the sort of people who're going to a "hosted" solution aren't those people (at least in my market), so what I'm after is a "fire and forget" solution - as by the time you've contacted the customer, persuaded them to buy a a new router, gone on-site, etc. you've lost any margin possible... So any comments on them welcome! Cheers, Gordon
