dovecot proxy, imapproxy, perdition . . . or?
...sers but in the sense of quick response time, since the main use is as a webmail backend. That means that instead of load-balancing connections between servers I will have to partition users between servers (all on one to begin with) and direct users to the corresponding server. I expected to use perdition, but when reading up on that I found imapproxy, which could be interesting for performance reasons, and also that dovecot has an included proxy, and that its performance is better than perdition. However on http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/ImapProxy the feature "IMAP/POP3 server with proxy featur...

Slow DNS warnings (proxy/auth)
Hello, I've just finished transiting our proxies from perdition to dovecot (2.1.7-7 Debian). Yesterday 12 messages (all within the same second) like this caught my attention: --- Apr 25 17:19:09 pp11 dovecot: auth: Warning: proxy(redacted at gol.com,xx.xx.xx.xx,<26hUEivbfQBlMrMS>): DNS lookup for mb04.dentaku.gol.com took 5.002 s --- Now this machine at...

Does Director only work with dovecot proxy?
I was reading "conf.d/10-director.conf" and it mentions Dovecot proxy. I've been using perdition in the past for my pop/imap proxying needs and wasn't sure if Director could also use perdition or if it only works with Dovecots proxying. Thanks!

securing dovecot proxy connections
The wiki <http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy> page says this: "The connections created to the destination server can't be TLS/SSL encrypted.". Hrmm. Right now, with perdition, I'm forcing the use of STARTTLS on the internal connections. I'd just as soon get rid of perdition (to have one less moving part in my architecture), but I need the secure connections. Is there a way to configure dovecot's internal proxy connections to use STARTTLS or some other SS...

Dovecot proxy in front of UWash?
Is it possible to use Dovecot frontends in front of UWash backends? I need a proxy pool ASAP. There is not sufficient time to migrate the backends for 40,000+ users so they have to stay UW for now. I have been looking at Perdition but concerned about performance under load. Dovecot looks really promising with it's non-forking mode. I need simple dumb frontends no local mail. Other questions: 1) Database? Wiki only talks about SQL, can I have it map username to hostname using LDAP or some other mechanism? 2) Kerberos? I...

Dovecot 2 and TCP-Keepalive
Hi! I am about to migrate a perdition-based IMAP/POP3 proxy to Dovecot. Unfortunately some users are behind a firewall/NAT setup which throws away seemingly idle TCP connections sooner than the established default of 24 hours (more likely after 30 minutes ...) resulting in all kinds of weird client behavior. And unfortunately? this f...

"Dumb" proxying?
I'm a database noob, and it really seems like it would be overkill for my setup: I just want to proxy all connections from my DMZ to my internal mail server -- same internal server for all users. I used to use perdition for this set up, but am having issues getting it to play nicely with my new servers. Can I bypass all of the SQL stuff and just have dovecot forward all POP/IMAP connections to a specific server? Or perhaps set up a wild card lookup in the database (preferably something serverless like sqlite)...

Is there a "connect acl" ?
Hi, I have been reading the acl documentation and it seems that a "connect acl" is not available. I need to limit the users that can login in an IP number, is that posible with dovecot 1.0? (i.e. only these users can login from the Internet) Or a new plugin should be written? It is complicated to do that? Thanks Oliver -- Oliver Schulze L. | http://tinymailto.com/oliver Asuncion

IMAP proxy - can it detect parodying to itself?
Hi all, I have some IMAP servers fronted with separate perdition processes, and it would be ideal if I could collapse this down to having dovecot do both the IMAP proxying and the IMAP serving at the same time on the same IP addresses. One of the fields in my LDAP entries contains the canonical name of the server that hosts their mailbox, and if I follow the ma...

Big sites using Dovecot
Hi, Are there any big Dovecot sites (say 50,000-100,000) users on this list? What sort of hardware do you use. What sort of problems do you see? Many thanks, Jonathan.

IMAP/POP3 proxying and capability
...mail client ask for capability before authenticate to the server. So if the proxy capability are not the same as the final server capability the client gets wrong information. I use the QUOTA extension and it doesn't make sens to activate the quota feature on the proxy. Any other suggestion ? Perdition can hardcode the capability string the his configuration file. This is not perfect as the capability can change but it's an acceptable workaround for me. -- Laurent Papier - 03 88 75 80 50 Admin. syst?me - SdV Plurimedia - <http://www.sdv.fr/>

[OT] Is there a secure reverse IMAP proxy
This question is off topic. I ask this list because the question is related to security and IMAP and I guess the people in this list know a lot about both of that. Is there a secure reverse proxy for the IMAP protocol? Something you can install on a bastion host which checks the IMAP traffic before forwarding it to the internal IMAP server? There are these proxies for WebMail to IMAP connections

Dovecot/IMP attachment problem
I recently installed dovecot in my production environment. This comprises about 60k mailboxes. The system was initially set up with dovecot 0.99.10.7 using maildirs. I have been using perdition to handle redirection during the process of converting from wu-imap. Last week it was brought to my attention that our webmail interface (horde/imp) is no longer allowing people to download attachments. Everything appears to work fine, however the downloaded files are 0 bytes in size. I built a...

proxy mode
Hello, I've searched the documentation for IMAP/POP3 server with proxy feature, but wiki says that this is not fully implemented yet, but wiki page hasnt been updated for a while. So is there any change since then? Because we are looking for a solution to replace the perdition POP3/IMAP proxy in front of the current UW-IMAP servers and we would really appreciate this feature, since the documentation says that proxy implementation in dovecot does not create a process for every user (problem with large number of concurrent users). Thanks in advance, cheers, Jernej

proxy_maybe regex
Does anyone know if dovecot support regex lookups for proxy/proxy_maybe, rather than mysql/ldap etc? I've been comparing it with perdition to see which one might be better for us to do layer7 username switching. Perdition supports the ability to not have any auth/db looks, but rather just a regex file that parses the usernames as they come in and forwards to the particular machine on the same port. For example: username:host ^[a...

advices for a new installation
...ll me, if it is better to : - have several IMAP frontend servers that proxy to the mail storage server or - still keeps NFS between the mail storage server and the frontends Dovecot ? On our Dovecot 1.x webmail use imapproxy. I've read that others proxies exist. We have used for a limited time Perdition. What is the differences between imapproxy, Perdition, nginx imap proxy and Dovecot proxy ? Thanks for sharing your experience of "large mail service" that are solid enought to be scaled.

Setting a Default Domain
I'm working on migrating to Dovecot. At the moment, I have a mail path that includes the domain, so I'm using %d to get that. However, if users authenticate without specifying a domain (i.e. using "bob" instead of "bob at wiktel.com"), then %d expands to nothing. I'd like to have that expand to a default domain (wiktel.com) instead. Is that possible? Thanks,

Lock file issues
...e stored in their Maildirs. I have mmap_disable=yes and lock_method=dotlock in dovecot.conf. We have not implemented anything to direct users to the same server as is recommended per the Wiki. I have been trying to avoid this, as the best way I could see to do it would be to put in an IMAP proxy (Perdition?) and I just wanted to keep it as simple as possible if I could. The problems we have been having are due to dovecot.*.lock files not being cleaned up. This issue presents itself as a user not being able to login via the webmail interface. The logfile will contain something similar to the followin...
