(retry) 3.0.7: username map doesn't work with security=ADS
...ge got mangled because of the attachments, so I'm
reposting)
I've got a samba 3 box that's part of an AD domain. It works correctly
for most users; but there was a problem where certain users couldn't
connect. We'd get a log message that looks like this:
Username SAMPLE.COM\pcuser is invalid on this system
It turns out that the users who could not connect are those who have a
different unix username then their AD username. Even though I have a
username map file set up, samba didn't seem to be using it.
This bug appeared somewhere between 3.0.2a and 3.0.6. When we wer...

SAMBA digest 2245 / cannot access the homes directory

Hi,
IMHO it seems that there are more problems there.
At first Win9x makes the login to any SMB network with the user name that
is used in the login screen when Windows is started. If you for instance
login on your PC as "pcuser" Windows tries to log you in on the Samba
server as user "pcuser". If "pcuser" does not exist or has a different
password you where asked for a password. The user name is checked against
the UNIX passwd if "encrypted passwords = no" or against smbpasswd if

Newbie configuration Q
...dows from anyone's PC (or from a background task on
the server). I'm not concerned about security - I don't mind if
everyone on the network has RW access to /shared.
I've managed to get it to work using authentication - ie. I've
generated an smbpasswd file, created the user (pcuser) in unix and
smb, set use encypted passwords = yes, and manually logged in from
the Windows box as pcuser and can see /shared OK.
What I'd like to do is open the /shared up to anybody so that it
doesn't need any authentication. Is this possible?
thanks for any tips

mount read/write ntfs via samba
Until now, we've been using samba to push out unix files to windows users.
With
Security = domain, this works perfectly. Now we'd like to go the other way
ie mount
on the linux side our PC files. Using
mount -t smbfs -username=administrator //pc-server/users /PCuser
works but all files appear to be owned by root so users can't write to
their own files.
I can add dmask=777, fmask=666 but then anyone can overwrite anything.
I was thinking of perhaps having the users mount the partition themselves eg
add to sudoers
smith ALL=/bin/mount
and then havin...

Help needed with Windows7 roaming files.
Hi all,
We've been trying to setup/upgrade a samba PDC (version 3.56) with OpenLDAP
as backend and roaming profiles for Windows7 (32bit) Clients. windows7 has
no problem
with login after applying the reg patches, however, it seems to always load
a temporary profile as opposed to roaming one for users, no local profile
is created.
this has caused Outlook 2010 to function improperly

valid users list file
Hi all,
I'm using valid users parameter in my smb.conf to allow certain users to
access a shared services but the list of the users are increasing. Is there
any possibility to put the names in a file and mapped the file to this
parameter or any other alternatives?
Thanks,

See also invalid users
Default: No valid users list (anyone can login)

IIRC there was a discussion recently on this list about the interaction
of this option with the "write list" and "read list" parameters, so you
should perhaps also play with this ones.

homes directory visible only for one user
Hi!
I'm kinda new, so i'm wondering how should i configure [homes] section, so
only two of many users (e.g. "user1" and "user2") could see it shared in
network (so only those users could access their homes)?
thanks in advance, andrej

select read/write access by user or group?
This should be simple, but I've been pounding my head against it for
several hours, and I'm not getting the result I want.
I'd like to be able to select shares, whether they are the root of a
drive or /home/username and designate who can read and who can read/write.
Does Samba have it's own groups to go with it's own users?
I really can only use "security = user"
