How create a FAT filesystem on a zvol?
The `lofiadm'' man page describes how to export a file as a block device and then use `mkfs -F pcfs'' to create a FAT filesystem on it. Can''t I do the same thing by first creating a zvol and then creating a FAT filesystem on it? Nothing I''ve tried seems to work. Isn''t the zvol just another block device? -- -Gary Mills- -Unix Group- -Computer a...

zfs/fstyp slows down recognizing pcfs formatted floppies
I''ve noticed that fstyp on a floppy media formatted with "pcfs" now needs somewhere between 30 - 100 seconds to find out that the floppy media is formatted with "pcfs". E.g. on sparc snv_48, I currently observe this: % time fstyp /vol/dev/rdiskette0/nomedia pcfs 0.01u 0.10s 1:38.84 0.1% zfs''s /usr/lib/fs/zfs/fstyp.so.1 seems to add a...

Hotplug issues on USB removable media.
Hi, As a part of the next stages of the time-slider project we are looking into doing actual backups onto removable media devices such as USB media. The goal is to be able to view snapshots stored on the media and merge these into the list of viewable snapshots in nautilus giving the user a broader selection of restore points. In an ideal world we would like to detect the insertion of the

ZFS Metadata on-disk grouping
...tored in larger blocks. These could also prove useful to implement my "Feature #1044: ZFS: Allow specifying minimum dataset/metaslab block size AND alignment" posted in https://www.illumos.org/issues/1044 Industry examples of grouped metadata could include copies of the FAT table in FAT/pcfs, and the $MFT pseudofile on NTFS. Difference is that ZFS metadata size is dynamic, so metadata regions should not rely on any predefined sizes. If this feature is not yet present, is it difficult or unreasonable for some reason to add one? Thanks, //Jim

ZFS and UFS performance
We are running Solaris 10 11/06 on a Sun V240 with 2 CPUS and 8 GB of memory. This V240 is attached to a 3510 FC that has 12 x 300 GB disks. The 3510 is configured as HW RAID 5 with 10 disks and 2 spares and it''s exported to the V240 as a single LUN. We create iso images of our product in the following way (high-level): # mkfile 3g /isoimages/myiso # lofiadm -a /isoimages/myiso

reconstruct recovery of rpool zpool and zfs file system with bad sectors
...appeared to have bad sectors. Faced with either a rebuild or an attempt at recovery, I first made an attempt to recover the slice before rebuilding. The c7t0d0 HDD (p0) was divided into p1 (NTFS 24GB), p2 (OpenSolaris 24GB), p3 (OpenSolaris zfs pool for data 160GB) and p4 (50GB extended with 32GB pcfs, 12GB linux and linux swap) partitions (or something close to that). On the first Solaris partition (p2), slice 0 was the OpenSolaris rpool zpool. To attempt recovery I booted the OpenSolaris 2009.06 live CD and was able to import the ZFS pool which was configured on p3. On the p2 device (Solaris...

dlstat for data link statistics
(Bcc''ed to networking discuss). Hi All, Have enclosed man page draft for dlstat(1M) herewith. This is part of the effort to gain better visibility into network traffic in light of crossbow features like virtual NICs, interrupt vs. polling modes etc. This in turn would greatly assist network performance analysis. It is also aimed at segregating link/flow configuration from
