At least the way we have configured exim, it neither needs reload or restart but reads the certificate file every time it has to use it. Attached you can find doveconf -n output and the used ldap.conf (both anonymized), the referenced /etc/dovecot/passdb.deny and /etc/dovecot/userdb.overrides are usually empty files and only used during mailbox migrations. ...I found 39 mails within ~12M mails. I was able to recover these mails "manually" by reconstructing the Return-Path header line, importing the fixed mails and expunging the corrupt ones. Before importing, I had to disable zlib_save option obviously.
