split file equivalent in R
Dear all
(a)in SPSS PASW there is a 'split file' command is repeats the same analysis for all sub-groups. Is there a split file equivalent in R?
(b) Is there a package in R that will compute immediately statistics like Hosmer and Lemeshow Test, pseudo-R squares etc without my intervention? I am mostly interested t...

Apostrophes in R Commander in recode
...I can use gsub from the command line to remove the apostrophes, or i can import the data file without using value labels as factor levels and that would doubtless work. But the technical documentation for the CES is very poor; my students would have to end up opening up the original .sav file in PASW and hunt down what the underlying factor levels refer to in that instance.
Is there a solution within R Commander?
Yours, Simon Kiss

read.spss: option "to.data.frame" and string variables
Dear R-users,
I am using R version 2.10.1 and package foreign version 0.8-39 under windows.
When reading .sav-Files (PASW Statistics 18.0.1) containing string variables, these are automatically converted to factors when using option "to.data.frame = TRUE" (see example below).
It's clear to me why this happens (the default behaviour of a call to as.data.frame). But this is not always what one might want (...

Updated comparison table for SAS-SPSS Add-ons and R Functions
Hi All,
I have substantially expanded the table that compares SAS and SPSS
add-on modules to somewhat equivalent R packages. This new version is
at:
http://r4stats.com/add-on-modules
and I would very much appreciate any feedback you might have on it.
The site http://r4stats.com is the replacement to
http://RforSASandSPSSusers.com and includes the support files for both
"R for SAS and SPSS

confidence interval for negatively skewed, leptokurtic sample
...e variance of the parent population of X. I thought about bootstrapping:
drawing various samples from the same basic population would enable me to
calculate a confidence interval for the parameter of interest, i.e. the
standard deviation. Do you think that?s a suitable approach? I?m currently
using PASW (former SPSS) which is obviously not a very powerful software,
but I have access to Stata computers, too.
Assuming that I receive a confidence interval for, say, the standard
deviation, then the next problem arises: the distribution of X is still
negatively skewed and leptokurtic, so how can I any...

Use of R in clinical trials
Dear all,
There have been a variety of discussions on the R list regarding the use of R in clinical trials. The following post from the STATA list provides an interesting opinion regarding why SAS remains so popular in this arena: http://www.stata.com/statalist/archive/2008-01/msg00098.html
