partitionless installation
Hello All! I have a lot of virtual machines with KVM hypervizor. For VM's disks I use LVM Volumes. It's more suitable to install virtual machines direct to the LV-volumes without making partition tables inside the LV. In this case it is very simple to perform online-resizing and mount snapshots in host system to perform backups. So, my question is: Is it possible to install CentOS

syslinux: Please provide -m and -a options on Linux
...ers, to write an MBR and to make sure the partition has the bootable flag set. Please consider adding support for the -m and -a options. (Also, if they don't already, please consider making the -m and -a options check for a valid partition table first to avoid mangling "superfloppy" partitionless USB drives.)" it would be nice if you could add said functionality. xen-utils-4.1, pygrub, xvda1, "Boot loader didn't return any data!"
Hello, xen-utils-4.1's pygrub is unable to boot VMs from a partitionless blockdev that has grub installed in first sector. I'm not sure it deserves a bug report, although it is kind of a regression from 4.0. Long story short: zeroing first sector of domU's boot blockdev fixes it. Maybe some of this report would be useful in the wiki, if someone else has the sam...

[PATCH] daemon: mkfs: Use -I option to force mkfs.fat to write a filesystem over a whole device (RHBZ#1039995).
From: "Richard W.M. Jones" <rjones@redhat.com> If you use virt-make-fs to create a partitionless FAT-formatted disk image then currently you will get an error: $ virt-make-fs --type=fat . /tmp/test.img 'mkfs' (create filesystem) operation failed. Instead of 'fat', try 'vfat' (long filenames) or 'msdos' (short filenames). mkfs: fat: /dev/sda: mkfs.fat: Device pa...

usb drives & Orico ORICO 9548U3-BK
Everyone, Is there a way to manually assign usb drives to a specified device label. Is there a way to force two usb drives to be labeled as /dev/sdc and /dev/sdd? I decided to build an archive server for the purpose of backing up other fedora/centos desktops at the office. I built a machine and have installed Centos 7.3 on it with all updates current. I also purchased a 3.0 usb sata drive

resize disk image partition
Hi, I''m trying to clarify if it''s at all possible to live resize a disk image. After trying and failing it seems that the reason a disk image cannot be resized - is that domU is only able to detect changes in partitions (eg. partprobe), not in block devices as the xvd driver lacks a rescan feature. My domU sees disk images as blockdevices - that is without a partition table,

LVM support ?
...years back [1] and a wiki page last updated 5 years ago [2]. In the meantime, is there something being done, or something I can help with? 1: https://www.syslinux.org/archives/2009-April/012418.html 2: https://wiki.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php?title=Development/LVM_support I have in mind making a partitionless LVM volume, similar to btrfs setup as discussed elsewhere [3]. It is clearly possible to reserve any amount of space at the beginning of an LVM physical volume, there is a flag exactly for this. The question is what boot loader can be employed. 3: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/103501/bo...

[PATCH][git-pull] core/diskstart.inc
git://git.zytor.com/users/genec/syslinux.git Branch core-diskstart-boot-for-hpa. I found that INT 13h AH 08h in BOCHS used ES, DI, at least when using a partitionless HDD, causing "Boot error" from the magic check as it was loaded to the wrong location. HPA suggested wrapping INT 13h with the push/pop for ES's safety. This then lead to checking over for all int 13h calls in diskstart.inc to try and use xint13 and no net increase in binary code si...

usb drives & Orico ORICO 9548U3-BK
...0 Another likely issue is that you explicitly mention /dev/sda in the fstab - if the drives are re-ordered, then /dev/sda will not be what you think it is. It's a much better idea to use UUIDs when mounting drives. You can find the UUID with lsblk --fs /dev/sda BTW, are you really using partitionless disks - is it really /dev/sda and not /dev/sda1 ? > > > This works perfectly when a usb mouse and a usb keyboard are attached, > but when I remove the mouse and keyboard the system will not boot > because the usb drives are relabeled as /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. Questions on qcow, qcow2 versus LVM
I''ve been using lvm under centos to create the backing store for domUs and although the performance seems acceptable it has some shortcomings. The biggest of which is the LVM bug which prevents me from removing an lv (it says it is still mounted and it definitely isnt). I thought this was just a centos bug but it appears to be evident in debian and ubuntu too and I really can''t

latest CVS on Mandrake 9.2 Mini ITX
..., wondering if you can help, I had a perfectly working Mandrake 9.2 box running on a via Mini ITX 5000/classic. Asterisk (zaptel and libpri) was built from CVS head around 22nd July 2005. I decided now was a good time to ghost it up....although humorous for you all suffice to say, I ended up with a partitionless box! Following the install script I had created I built an identical server to the original one. I then tried to install asterisk from cvs head using the following command 'cvs checkout zaptel libpri asterisk' when downloaded, zaptel and libpri built fine however asterisk, returns - ----...

installing R for unix on PC
Dear R-users, Probably this is rather general question and I apologize for this: I'm using R and other softwares on Win and I would like to install Linux on my PC in order to be able to install R for unix. Is there anyone that wants to suggest me what do I need to partion my hard disk and to install linux and then R? In this way I could use both Win and Linux on my PC, am I right? Is there

Changes to get CD to boot on EFI System.

I would be willing to try such an ISO with qemu+OVMF. Regrettably my real test iron has no EFI firmware. Do you know the
