[RFC] Online dedup for Btrfs
...older kernels. You select your hashing function (at the momement I only support sha1 but there is room in the format to have different functions). This creates a btree indexed by the hash and the bytenr. Then we lookup the hash and just link the extent in if it matches the hash. You can use -o paranoid-dedup if you are paranoid about hash collisions and this will force it to do the memcmp() dance to make sure that the extent we are deduping really matches the extent. So performance wise obviously the compat mode sucks. It''s about 50% slower on disk and about 20% slower on my Fusion car...

Help with acts as paranoid
Hello, I am using acts as paranoid which works great. But I have the following problem. I have table a which has a has_many :tableb, :dependent => false relationship with table b. If I delete something in a and then try to edit a field in table b I get an error because it says the data does not exist so it doesn''t allow...

Finding really-really-really > convincing proof it is not a result of compromise (and yes, fight one's > wishful thinking!). You aren't being paranoid enough. If it happened as a result of following some instructions or running a script, it's not just the box that is compromised, it is everything you think you know. On the other hand it could have just been an accidental typo. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

acts_as_paranoid overrides ActiveRecord::Base??
Guys, I am trying to figure out what exactly does this line do at the end of "acts_as_paranoid" plugin? ActiveRecord::Base.send :include, Caboose::Acts::Paranoid::ActiveRecord My problem: I have some classes that I use acts_as_paranoid, and others with tagging support. Classes declared as taggable, throw error, which appears to be in the acts_as_paranoid version of the "find&...

Sendmail, localloop, and iptables -- should I be more paranoid?
By default, sendmail only listens on the localloop: DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')dnl But by default to allow sendmail to even work the iptables entry is: -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 25 -j ACCEPT Without this, sendmail can't even connect to localloop. But should I handedit this line to something like: -A

[patch] paranoid checksum checking
The attached patch provides an additional check for the checksumming mode to ensure that a file that is actually written out to disk can be read back and has the same MD4 sum as the file on at the originating location. single rsync of large directory structure versus several smaller rsync's
...cked up and given an over-worked sysadmin (never!) we might miss the error until the day we need the backups. If I do a seperate: rsync -vaze ssh /home/adoe rsync -vaze ssh /home/jdoe rsync -vaze ssh /home/zdoe etc. I should still have a backup of each dir even if some fail. Is this being too paranoid? Is there something built into rsync to avoid this? Does anyone have any better ideas for me? I want to make the best use of rsync possible. xinetd v. tcp-wrappers
I am interested in opinions regarding the use of xinetd versus the use of tcp wrappers. The two programs have similar functionality, but I find xinetd suits my needs better. The biggest problem is the age of xinetd, and AFAIK it is no longer being kept up. Are there any known security issues with xinetd? Another issue is that xinetd makes use of a non-standard inetd.conf layout, but

Encrypted remote backup?
...st back up my mail folder on my server. I've been backing it up to local hd via rsync but that drive just died, I'd prefer to have it backed up to somewhere more stable than a home box and automated via cron (cli tools a must), but encryption is important, people are snoopy and I'm paranoid about that sort of stuff.

yay for zfs
This zfs looks great! I really hope this gets put into solaris soon since I don''t think I could live with Solaris express on a production machine. The easy of adding disk and moving directories looks like a life saver, especially for me who deals with trying to store digital media which piles up a couple of gig a day!
