"Wbinfo -u" get user account sucessfully but "getent passwd" fails
Hi everybody,
I got a problem here with my Samba ADS member server. It functions as a
file server and works for a long time. A few weeks ago our Active
Directory domain controller failed due to power outage. We fixed it and
now an employee reports that he could not use the samba file server any
more. I restarted samba service and did the following testing:
1) getent passwd <thisUser>

I would like help to "fine tunning" SAMBA or to
discover some secret windows registry key that allow me
to change how it "free" the share (some kind of expire
or delay).
Thanks in advance.

Testing subnets with samba[Scanned]
OK before i start, this was something i was just testing while everyone was in training this afternoon. I have never had to deal with subnets before as we only have a few users, but decided to do a little bit of messing around to gain some experience.
Basically we have one server (mandriva 2006) running samba, it has two 4 port ethernet cards in it but only utilitising one port from each card.

"password server" in smb.conf
Hi,
I use winbindd and to use it I write my Active Directory Domain
Controller in the "password server" directive in smb.conf.
Since I have not one but two servers (for failover situations), can I
write another password server?

Two domains on one network?
I feel I should know the answer to this, but I wanted to verify. I have a
bunch of Windows PC's running Win 2K Pro, on three subnetworks. Two of the
subnets are served by Unix (FreeBSD) boxes running NATD, but all are joined
to a domain being run on a Win 2K Pro server in another building on the
campus. So far I haven't joined the two Unix boxes to the domain.
I'd like to

Samba 3.0.23c-1.fc5 problem - groups
Hi there,
I use FC5.
I discovered, for an exemple, if you have a user group with 3 members (Alan,
Baker, Clive), before 3.0.23c this line at smb.conf worked fine:
valid users = @user
But with 3.0.23c update it doesn't work anymore.
You have to replace the line like this:
valid users = Alan, Baker, Clive
I mean, replace the "@groupname" with the complete userlist of the

What management of samba is available for large scale deployment
I'm working for a higher education institution, and we have Novell Netware
for our file sharing services. We are looking at what migration paths
are available.
I know samba works, we use it on a number of Solaris and Linux boxes and
have it authenticate against our Windows ADS. Manually editing samba
confiiguration files for up to a hundred users is OK. The challenge is how
do you manage a

Samba-3.0.23 problem
We had to power down all servers today for electrical maintenance in the
building and for some reason I began having access problems related to
the valid users lists when power was restored.
The dialog from the 'Samba-3.0.23 broke my network' thread seemed as if
it might be related even though I had not performed any software upgrade
so I tried adding the group mappings as discussed in

remote groups as members of a samba ldap group
I've gotten Samba+LDAP working on one network, and trust relationship
established with a remote AD network. I've also got my samba groups as
members of the AD groups (eg, Samba "users" is a member of AD "users",
with the ACL stuff working as expected). Going the other direction seems
somewhat non-obvious however. Somehow, I will need to include the winbind
groups as

Printing to /dev/null ?
Hi list!
I need a Samba printer that will route all printjobs to /dev/null
(We have accounting software that requires every invoice to be printed
before it can be booked and the invoice data is imported from other
software so it's just wasting paper).
I tried creating a printer in cups with a printer URI of /dev/null but
that doesn't work, the print jobs are just piling up and never

NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Hi!
After an upgrade of our Suse installation (9.2 to 10) Samba doesn't work
any more.
I have come so far that wbinfo and getent works perfectly but when
trying to connect with smbclient i get the following:

Password:
Domain=[ALFA-MOVING] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.20-4-SUSE]
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

Add machine, user, group, etc. scripts
Can anyone tell me exactly how the various add machine/user/group/etc/
scripts work in Samba? I know how to set them up in smb.conf. That's
not problem. But how are they invoked? Some use Samba specific
variables like %u and %m. How do you run a script manually to use these
variables?
If you have an add user script and a non-user tries to log in, does it
create an account for him?

How do I become a domain admin?
Just setup a new domain controller running Samba-3.0.20b.
Using smbpasswd file (no LDAP).

migration strategy
I would like some advice on a migration strategy. Soon I will be migrating
from a old samba 2.2 server PDC server to a new samba 3 server (on new
hardware). I also wish to take this opportunity to rename the server which
I understand will change the SID.
What is the recommended method to achieve this without having to touch any
of the workstations?
Can I copy the old smbpasswd file to the new
