I am asking because we are using a product called packetfence that generates an smb.conf automatically, based on configuration provided in their web admin interface. The config that packetfence generates includes the line > password server = samba4.domain.com I asked them why that is, and if it's perhaps better to remove it, so their config will...

[OT] DHCP auth&auth software
Does anyone know about some free (as in beer, and maybe as in speech) software which would implement authentication and authorization of a user prior to issuing a valid dhcp lease? I imagine the following scenario: someone walks into my office building with a laptop (a colleague, a visitor, a guest, whoever), and hooks up onto the local net (wired or wireless). The server detects an unknown

MS-RPC error
Hi, We have integrated CISCO ISE with Samba-AD. However we are receiving the below error. “Authentication encountered an error due to the network, AD DNS misconfiguration. This may be a temporary error” However the AD Log reports the authentication is successful. I saw a bug reported at*/https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11892.

One server not showing SSH port, the other is.
I have two CentOS servers running SSH on two different non-standard ports. So far as I can tell, they have identical /etc/ssh/sshd_config files with the exception of the different port (both are 22xx). However, when running nmap on them, one betrays the port that SSH is running on, and the other does not. I have shut down iptables on both machines and the behaviour remains this way. What could be

How to make nodes in my local LAN see each other's names
Hello Sorry for the (I guess) simple question, but: I have 7 computers under one 8-port router (D-Link DIR-100, firmware v1.13EU) in my network (actually in a sub-network) and they do not see each other's host names. The router has the 'DNS relay' option enabled, and all 7 computers use the router as the DNS server, which in turn will forward DNS requests to the ISP DNS server.

an actual hacked machine, in a preserved state
(Sorry, third time -- last one, promise, just giving it a subject line!) OK, a second machine hosted at the same hosting company has also apparently been hacked. Since 2 of out of 3 machines hosted at that company have now been hacked, but this hasn't happened to any of the other 37 dedicated servers that I've got hosted at other hosting companies (also CentOS, same version or almost),
