VNC server not reponding to external requests
Hello everyone:
I tried following the instructions on this page to set up a VNC
server:
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/VNC-Server
I can telnet to port 5901 from the machine itself:
# telnet 127.0.0.1 5901
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to 127.0.0.1.
Escape character is '^]'.
RFB 003.008
But, when I try to connect to it from the outside world, I get a connection
timeout.

[6.2] Postfix not reading main.cf
Hello:
I just did a fresh install of CentOS 6.2 on a virtual server.
I am trying to configure Postfix but it does not seem to be
reading configuration directives from /etc/postfix/main.cf
Here is what I did to test it:
vi /etc/postfix/main.cf and set this directive:
myorigin = hello.world.com
postfix reload
postconf -d | grep myorigin
I get this output:
append_at_myorigin = yes
myorigin =

elementary usage clamping
I''m pretty smart, and was once regarded as pretty network and computer
savvy. But the world has obviously passed me by!
I have a server in a colocation facility, and I was recently hit by a
bill for overage; I used more bandwidth than I expected, and I must
pay.
So now, I want to bother with packet shaping on the server. The *most*
important thing is to clamp bandwidth to the 1Mbps

Samba performance for small files
Hello,
I'm testing the performance of Samba share when a windows client copy a
directory that contains many small files (8-18KB).
From the windows client during the transfer the speed goes up and down
to 0KB/sec, so it's not stable.
I have run the same test on a Windows server share (on the same hardware
as the Samba share) and the transfer speed is stable, about 404KB/sec
which is

TBF maximum bucket size
I''m trying to fill a token bucket with enough tokens to burst several gigs
of data. However, it doesn''t seem to get any higher than ~3.9GB:
>tc qdisc add dev eth0 root tbf rate 1440kbit latency 50ms \
burst 16000000000
>tc qdisc show dev eth0
qdisc tbf 800b: rate 1440Kbit burst 3908420240b lat 2197.8s
A smaller attempt of ~1.6 gigs works just fine:

followup to request for centos C/W
just to follow on my earlier post, i have pointers to a couple
commercial C/W manuals for RHEL administration, but both of them use
an entire chapter discussing virtualization using Xen. i'm under the
impression that RH is firmly in the KVM camp (at least for now), and
that learning Xen on red hat/centos wouldn't be as useful as learning
KVM.

Pool printing via cups and notification via samba
Hello,
I've been thinking about setting up some sort of pool printing,
where a job can be sent and the system can decide which printer
to send it to.
I know that with cups I can define a pool, but I'd like to have
samba print a notification as to which printer cups sent the
job to.
The rationale is: I have multiple printers, each under a
maintenance agreement. I have some printers

CentOS Amazon Machine Image?
...for
free. A typical month is 744 hours. You can split that up however you want.
Run 75 instances for 10 hours each? Sure. Run 750 instances for 1 hour
each? Sure. AWS billing can get complex, but be aware that you can be
charged for run time of your instance(s), additional storage space,
bandwidth overages, etc. There isn't much to worry about if you are being
reasonable but TANSTAAFL so read through https://aws.amazon.com/free/ and
understand what the limitations are.

Are you doing it on the same hardware, same drive, same everything? Even
if you are, keep in mind that one

I get a different answer from ifconfig:

Xen Database vms
Are "centralized" database (SQL) servers best left out of virtualization
and committed to their own hardware like the "old days" or are there
some guidelines one should consider in setting them up? I'm not talking
mega-large recordsets, but large enough to handle multiple years of CRMs
and intensive querying, Accounting Systems and so forth.

Small proxy appliance hardware
I need to configure a small proxy appliance which doesn't require a lot
of CPU power. I'm looking for any warnings this group may have
regarding CentOS-5 on the following:

- Dell Inspiron 537s (Celeron)
- Any other small machines you might recommend (UL approved)
I need to implement dual NICs, and for the Dell it should be no problem

if they have started blocking IP addresses from Colombia? I would

This discussion used to be on the libvirt list, but seems
more appropriate for the users list so I am replying here.

acrobat reader for x86_64?
Adobe doesn't seem to have acroread for x86_64 linux, or at least I don't
see it anywhere.
Anybody know otherwise?
Evince and other tools work pretty well, but I have always liked having
the "real thing" around for those occasions when they don't.

I am trying to install the TunkeyLinux Core appliance
