JOB - PhD position: applying HPC in cancer research
...y noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) in modulating the behaviour of cancer cells. These are RNA molecules that are transcribed, but never translated into protein sequences. Advances in sequencing technology have revealed large numbers of novel ncRNA loci in the genome, to the point where they are now known to outnumber protein-coding genes. Whilst most are uncharacterised, recent work has shown an increasing number to be functional ? and to act in a variety of regulatory roles within the cell. The successful applicant will join a highly interdisciplinary team comprising numerical- and biological-scientists who...

Wanted: a way to test changes before breaking all the build bots.
So, I broke a few build modes with a recent commit (r266002). I had been
developing with clang in debug mode, which worked and passed tests fine.
But upon committing, I discovered that I had broken:
1) Bots building with GCC. (fixed subsequently in r266011)
2) Bots doing an NDEBUG build with -Werror. (fixed subsequently in r266016)
3) Bots building llvm with msan. (fixed via revert r266062)

[Bug 225] New: Supression of login warning banner for noninteractive commands
...KDT 2002
catbert$
So, to effect this change, I created the following patchfile. Granted, there
may be some installation somewhere that absolutely requires login banners for
everything, even noninteractive sessions, but I'm convinced that the number of
people in the same boat as myself far outnumber these select few, so maybe the
supression of the banners could be the default behavior, and displaying them
(for noninteractive sessions) could be a compile-time option.

Opinion on different web server setups?
This is not directly a Rails question but you lot seem the best to
ask...
I have a strong feeling we will be developing future apps in Rails
(Ruby fans are slowly starting to outnumber cynics in my office) so I
want a web server plan that will be appropriate for that. We have
just bought two new web servers I want to turn into a load-balanced,
redundant pair. As well as any Rails apps, we also need to host two
Java webapps (XWiki and a JasperReports server), and a hos...

Though Java is one of the top languages in the software world, that world is so fragmented that even its enviable spot near the top [3] means it?s got hold of less than a sixth of the market.
If that still impresses you, you aren?t thinking clearly about how badly outnumbered that makes you. *Everyone* with a single-langauge advocacy position is badly outnumbered. This is why I learn roughly one new programming language per year.

SPIRV-LLVM as an external tool
Hi,
for a few months already I have been asking around for opinions on how
people could best work together on Khronos' SPIR-V <-> LLVM-IR converter
and some consensus seems to have formed.
Most of the people I talked to favored having the converter become an
external tool within the LLVM project, similar to libclc. I think that
the LLVM project's processes, infrastructure and

FLAC implementation in Windows 10
...ison, Apple enables Sample Rate Conversion for music playing through iTunes, but they did not select the highest quality conversion available in CoreAudio. Instead, Apple seem to have favored the quality level that uses the least amount of CPU. It's probably true that casual music listeners far outnumber audiophile listeners, and thus it makes sense for the simplest features to favor minimal CPU rather than maximal quality. Perhaps Microsoft decided not to showcase the best that FLAC can do in terms of compression efficiency, but rather to select the best that FLAC can do in terms of minimal CPU...

New controller card issues
...far as system boards are concerned, I'm happy with
Tyan, whose boards I'm using forever, who is in server board business
forever (which was true even when Supermicro just emerged).
As far as RAID cards are concerned... This is a bit more difficult thing.
I do use both LSI and 3ware. 3ware outnumbers LSI in my server room by a
factor of 5 at least. LSI is good solid hardware that exists forever
(pretty much as 3ware does). For me big advantage of 3ware is transparent
interface. By which I mean web interface. There is command line interface
for both and 3ware command line interface may be les...

Maybe we won't be as happy as if you picked Mercurial over Git, but we're going to be *greatly* outnumbered by the Git users who would scream bloody murder if you picked Mercurial instead.
In closing, just go with Git and tell people who don't like it to use Mercurial and Hg-git. We're adaptable.
p.s. The Mercurial subrepositories feature is loads better than git submodules and it's bu...

optional because you are gambling the potential benefits of redundancy
elimination vs the potential benefits from function simplification. This
can lead to large benefits or regressions depending on the benchmark

section contains data for both on a variety of benchmarks.
-- Why at the IR level --
The decision to place the outliner at the IR level comes from a couple of
major factors:
- Desire to be target independent
- Most opportunities for congruency
The downside t...

Useful books for learning the R software and the S programming language
any useful books for learning the R statistical software?
are they pricey?
and if the books recommended focus on S, how compatible will they be for
someone learning R?
thank you in advance for your help.
P.S.
specialized survey statistical procedures? Is R good at that?

OT: Best DB
I know this is a bit off topic but we are using Asterisk :)
Since this list is full of tech gurus w/ all different sorts of backgrounds,
I thought I would get the best opinions here.
We have several different switches and other telecom equipment at our
facilities which all have their own proprietary cdr platforms, which are
rather limited. The company I work for is looking to develop their
