eval in parent frame: scoping rule confusion
Hi all, Look at the following "stupid" function that is created just to show the problem: outlayer <- function(x) { inlayer <- function(z){ e1 <- parent.frame() eval(expression(y<-log(z)),e1) } inlayer(10) y } I have a compilation error when running this. My purpose is to create "y" variable equal to log(z) in the frame of "outlay". How can I achieve this...

is Intel VT-d "really" necessary?
Hi all, I'm just curios and would like some input from the community on this one. We're busy budgeting for a couple of new servers and I thought it would be good to try out the Core i7 CPU's, but see the majority of them don't offer VT-d, but just VT-x. Looking at the LGA1366 range, only the "Intel lga1366 i7 980XE" (from the list of what our suppliers stock) have VT-d,

SIP hardware phones
I'm trying to understand why vendors keep making 100Mbps integrated 1-port switches in their hardware SIP phones. Even the recently-announced D40 and D50 Digium phones are limited to 100Mbps. Only the more expensive models (like the D70) can run at 1000Mbps. However, you can't expect a firm with hundreds of extensions to buy the most expensive model... And gigabit speed is important when

Asterisks integration with pre-existing PBXs
Several people have asked about integrating asterisk in a company that currently has a PBX installed. Considering the capital outlay for most PBXs, depending on the model and age of the system, most companies do not want to look at replacement. So, what should one look at in a PBX in order to integrate asterisk into a pre-existing PBX? I have read of some systems with T1 interfaces, but what

Using frequent keepalives to eliminate need for NAT port forwarding?
I have an asterisk system behind NAT, and need to connect to public PSTN originators via SIP or IAX2, but don't have the option of forwarding any ports (4569, 5060, etc) to the asterisk system. However, the NAT system does properly establish transient UDP forwarding on the basis of outgoing connections, so is it possible to configure asterisk to send frequent keepalive UDP packets (say every

How much to charge for Asterisk installations?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I have a medium sized business that is interested in implementing * as their PBX system. - Advice on NetFinity 5000 series
I have an opportunity to pick up a couple of NetFinity 5500's 4 way Xeon 550's w/ 2 gig RAM for very little $$$ I have seen this: http://www.mail-archive.com/asterisk-dev@lists.digium.com/msg00719.html In it, there is a passing remark to the Digium cards having problems with NetFinity's. Can anyone here comment on whether this is still an issue with * 1.0? It'd be a bummer if

Telephoning Announcements -- Suggestions?
In the subdivision where I live, we have a well that time to time has problems. Currently, our trustees call me, I take a message, and then call the people on our "phone calling tree" and give them the message. They, in turn, pass the message on to the rest of the residents. We have a few problems with the way this works -- people don't bother to relay the message, or,

OT: Large corporate email systems - Exchange vs open source *nix based
Hello, There has been some whispers about considering migrating our mail systems to Exchange Server. I want to try to nip this in the bud. I would like to ask for some help with providing some kind of comparison of large(r) commercial companies use of email systems... specifically, those using Microsoft Exchange Server, vs those using open source Linux/Unix based systems, including even
