ifelse() woes ... can we agree on a ifelse2() ?
...(for what that's worth...) that x = rnorm(100) y = ifelse2(x > 0, 1L, 2L) should continue to work. Also, If we combine a stricter contract that the output will always be of length with the suggestion of a specified output class the pseudo code could be ifelse2 = function(test, yes, no, outclass) { lenout = length(test) out = as( rep(yes, length.out = lenout), outclass) out[!test] = as(rep(no, length.out = lenout)[!test], outclass) #handle NA stuff out } NAs could be tricky if outclass were allowed to be completely general, but doable, I think? Another approach if we ARE fast-pas...

KVM vs ESXi
...The server itself is a budget build using a Supermicro X8SAX board w/ i7-950 & 12GB RAM, LSI 3081 SAS RAID (1068e based), rolled into a NorcoTek 16 Bay SAS case. Not fancy but also decent enough for home use. I don't expect high performance out of this unit so unless the gear is hopelessly outclassed, I'm not in a position to entertain upgrading. Right now forking over $1000-$1500 on a $2000 system for a pair of higher end LSI/3ware/Acreca controller just isn't in the budget. ;-) My question to everyone are these: -How well does KVM support Windows Guests? I'm already running a...

Theora Intra (ptalarbvorm) vs. MJPEG
...an rsync module for the intra comparison, so you can pull down everything (or take your pick of what to pull down) via anonymous rsync, as well: rsync://media.basilgohar.com/intra-comparison/ You are welcome to see the results for yourself, but in short, in all case, Theora Intra (TheoraPro?) far outclassed MJPEG in terms of quality, which pleasantly surprised me. It is for this reason I have gone to these lengths to make this comparison widely available. In some cases, the rate control for the MJPEG went haywire, so you'll find that some of the MJPEG clips are much larger than the Ogg Theora...

maximum cpus/cores in CentOS 4.1
What is the maximum number of AMD64 cores supported by CentOS 4? The RedHat page https://www.redhat.com/software/rhel/configuration/ suggests that RHEL 4 AS supports up to 8 AMD64/EM64T logical cpus. Is that accurate and does it apply to CentOS 4? I see a few vendors offering boxes with 8 (dual core) CPU sockets. IWILL for one. Thanks, Tony Schreiner Boston College

CentOS 7 and Areca ARC-1883I SAS controller: JBOD or not to JBOD?
Hi, Does anyone have experiences about ARC-1883I SAS controller with CentOS7? I am planning to have RAID1 setup and I am wondering if I should use the controller's RAID functionality which has 2GB cache or should I go with JBOD + Linux software RAID? The disks I am going to use are 6TB Seagate Enterprise ST6000NM0034 7200rpm SAS/12Gbit 128 MB If hardware RAID is preferred, the
