splitting strings effriciently
Folks, I have a data frame with 4861469 rows that contains an ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx as one of the columns. I want to assign a site to each row based on IP ranges. To do this I have a function to split the ip address as character into class A,B,C and D components. It works but is horribly inefficient in terms of speed. I can't quite see how one of the l/s/m/t/apply functions could be

spurious domian login problems
We have a few win9x workstations, that have spurious login problems. They get the message: No domain server was available to validate your password you may not be able to gain access to some network resources. The passwords are definetly correct and the problem will sometimes disappear after 5 - 10 retries, but almost always after a full restart of the win9x PC, very occasionally it takes as

My linux server adjusted the time automatically and I was happy. Also my win95 workstations told me that the time information had changed. I double checked the time on linux and it

seeing/setting file or directory owners from win9x just like from nt/w2k
Hi All, Is there a way (speak command/wsh script) that allows a win9x workstation that is logged into a samba domain server (running onlinux for example) to see from the workstation what owner a certain file or directory has? Under win2k the "dir /q" command does this adequately. And if this is possible, is it then possible for someone to change the ownership of a file to another

I am trying to use 'wpkg' omn win xp sp2 machine, a windows package installer service, to access shares on my domain server. 'Wpkg' is running as a local service on a windows xp box that is joined to a domain, and I would like this local 'wpkg' service that is running with local systems rights to access files on a samba domain share. I have played with a number of options

Failure to compile tiff package
I would be grateful for a bit of help. I am on a 32bit build of Ubuntu LTS 12.04 running R version 2.15.2 (2012-10-26) -- "Trick or Treat" Platform: i686-pc-linux-gnu (32-bit) from within RStudio and from within a terminal (sudo R | install.packages("tiff") ) I have the following compile error: > install.packages("tiff") Installing package(s) into
