The support for ALSA OSS emulation seems to have been dropped in Wine 1.3.19. Before 1.3.19 Wine had no problem including the ability to use OSS output even with just ALSA installed, but from 1.3.19 and onward OSSv4 is required to build Wine with OSS support. Personally I find this kind of problematic since a lot of applications work better with Wine using OSS instead of ALSA, and sometimes the other way around. This was no problem when both options where available thanks to the OSS emulation of ALSA, but now...

...y, in fact. I can live with restraining those "custom binaries" in their own dusty little folders, but I'd like to know why something that other people build works and something I don't doesn't. The only thing that configure tells me is that it can't find OpenCL, libsane, OSSv4 and libcapi20, which shouldn't make any difference. My guess is that it's the compiler messing up (GCC 4.4.5). I didn't think this would be an issue because I always disable Steam Community stuff. When I run ./configure, I'm usually missing libhal, OSSv4, gphoto, OpenCL, and gstreamer development libraries. I have some problems with sound quality in Wine when running Spotify. The quality is not as good as it is on Windows. There is a slight distortion (I guess that's the word) which doesn't exist on Windows. I've tried with OSSV4 and ALSA but it's still there so maybe the problem is in Wine. Is there anything more I can try? My soundcard is Audiophile 2496.

Hi, since the Wine 1.3.27 update (on Ubuntu), some applications don't start anymore, especially Google SketchUp. A window pops up immediately saying that the program has to be closed. This happens with programs that depend on msvcp80.dll. I tried all combinations of native/built-in etc. Then I rebooted and created a completely new empty prefix and even Wine's iexplore.exe does not start.
