question about scan()
Hi, I am using the scan function to read from a file. In general the syntax I am using is as follows: scan("myfile", list(a = "", b="", c="", d=""), sep=",") The file I am trying to read contains a #< in the 'd' field. When the file is read into an object, the d field comes as "" for that particular string. I

slow with one transfer, fast with multiple
Running samba with Ubuntu, default configuration, one share, samba running as daemons rather from inetd. Copying one file between the share and another machine on the LAN is very slow. Adding another copy and both transfers proceed very quickly. The client machines are Macs with recent OSX, and a Windows laptop. Same behavior. If the second transfer is initiated on a different client, both

R v/s S-plus
Hi all, I have Splus and R both on my unix machine. I intend to keep only one of them. R looks to be a better choice. But I want to confirm. Is there any function or group of functions in Splus that are absent in R? using winbind to map existing unix to AD users
On our campus, we have an AD forest. Our particular department has a number of samba servers that authenticate to one tree of that AD forest. All of our users have accounts in LDAP for unix and AD for windows. We don't want/need winbind for authentication. However, we would like the ability of setting ACLs on the samba server from windows clients. So, I assume I need a mapping of unix

ADFS support?
Hi, Is it possible to query an Exchange server for its user list via ADFS using samba? I'm interested in integrating this support with postfix on my fedora system instead of having to maintain the list in Exchange and the list as a map in postfix. I really don't know much about Exchange and whether/how this would work. Is it secure? Is LDAPS an alternative? Is it secure? Thanks, Alex

Samba Usage (University especially)
Our usage of Samba is being questioned with regards to being "non-standard" as against Windows NT servers. As the Samba Survey has been defunct for a while, I wonder if: a) there is any suitable advocacy document listing large and famous users of Samba? b) If not I would be happy to summarise responses from those prepared to go public. I am especially interested in Universities and
