What commands are available in recovery mode?
I have a CentOS VM that I messed up and it now can't find /home
(because it's gone), so it comes up in recovery mode.
What can I do in recovery mode? It won't let me modify any files,
which makes it hard to fix the fstab, so ...???

Needed help to fix corrupted ext3 fs
I have been trying very hard to seek help with my very complex issue but
so far none have been successful. So I would like to try this mailing
list, maybe there are some experts who know what they're talking about.
Please refer to my experts-exchange question, all the required
information will be there. It is more practical to send you to the
webpage than paste out what I've done.

Cosmetical printk change, remounting problems.
...e readonly; I did a badblock test on it (which
returned zero errors, *sigh*, I love flaky hardware), e2fsck'ed it
(complained only about a missing lost+found an some wrong free block

root@yadda:~# mount -oremount,rw /dev/hdk1
mount: block device /dev/hdk1 is write-protected, mounting read-only
root@yadda:~#
which was accompanied by the following printk's:
ext3_abort called.

Do I have to reboot the server to be able to mount the FS...

Oracle 9.2.0.6 on Solaris 10
How can I tell if this is normal behaviour? Oracle imports are horribly slow, an order of magnitude slower than on the same hardware with a slower disk array and Solaris 9. What I can look for to see where the problem lies?
The server is 99% idle right now, with one database running. Each sample is about 5 seconds. I''ve tried setting kernel parameters despite the docs saying that

High load averages with latest kernel and USB drives?
I'm having a server report a high load average when backing up Postgres
database files to an external USB drive. This is driving my loadbalancers all
out of kilter and causing a large volume of network monitor alerts.
I have a 1TB USB drive plugged into a USB2 port that I use to back up the
production drives (which are SCSI). It's working fine, but while doing backups
(hourly) the
