Also the server does domain checking by another NT server box, and all these
users have entries in /etc/passwd
Does anyone know of a switch I can use so that forces the user logging in
(if it is permitted to do so by /etc/group) to use the mp3users group?

rPref 1.0 - Computing Pareto Optima and Database Preferences
Dear R users,
the first 1.0 version of the rPref package is now on CRAN.
rPref allows to select the Pareto-optimal tuples from a data set, also
called Skylines in the database community. For example, optimal tuples
from mtcars according to "high(mpg) * high(hp)" (where "*" is the Pareto
operator) are those cars, for which no other dominating car exists.
There, a car dominates another ca...

set.seed(121)
final<-0
nuevo<-0
for(i in 1:100000){
nuevo<-sample(datos$pedidos,replace=T)
final[i]&...

Is it possible to read jpeg files into R?
...adBin, using a simple black-and-white line graph,
but the numeric result appears to be much too complex for
a simple line graph and I cannot see how to use image or
contour to re-create the original jpeg image. Is there an
R routine to do this?

making operators act on rows of a data frame
...be impractical in the program I am trying to write (where
the columns I wish to sum are numerous and change from time to time).
I would be very grateful to know if it is possible to get operators
to act on rows of a data frame, and if so, how.
I am running R1.8.1 on Windows NT.

QUERY: function optimize
I have had problems with the function optimize/optimise
for maximising/minimising a function of one variable. It
seems to get easily fooled by local optima. Obviously
this can happen to any numerical optimiser but some of
the examples I have a pretty disappointing. Any comments
of suggestions of a better R-function?

Problem in optimization of Gaussian Mixture model
...eeks.
I have some Gaussian mixtures parameters and I want to find the maximum in
that
*Parameters are in the form *
mean1 mean2 mean3 sigma1 sigma2 sigma3 c1 c2 c3
506.8644 672.8448 829.902 61.02859 9.149168 74.84682 0.1241933
0.6329082 0.2428986
I have used optima and optimx to find the maxima, but it gives me value
near by the highest mean as an output, for example 830 in the above
parameters. The code for my optim function is
val1=*optim*(par=c(X=1000, *seg=1*),fn=xnorm, opt=c(NA,seg=1),
method="BFGS",lower=-Inf,upper=+Inf, control=list(fnscale...

R hang-up using lm
...wess line
lines(lowess(y[x2==0]~x1[x2==0]))
I can also avoid the problem by coercing x1 and x2 to be vectors.
So, I don't need help to solve the problem. But, it seems an odd
problem since it affects one plotting method, but not the other,
and it actually causes R to crash.

does svm have a CV to obtain the best "cost" parameter?
Hi all,
I am using the "svm" command in the e1071 package.
Does it have an automatic way of setting the "cost" parameter?
I changed a few values for the "cost" parameter but I hope there is a
systematic way of obtaining the best "cost" value.
I noticed that there is a "cross" (Cross validation) parameter in the "svm"
function.
But I

grateful.
