Easy, Robust and Stable GUI???
I know that this isn't really a R help question, but I am a psychology student at TRU (tru.ca) and my psych department is going to be switching statistical software in the near future. I thought this might be a good oppertunity to advocate for open source if an acceptable option is available. I have looked around a bit and R seems to be the most stable and mature (not to mention powerful) open source statistical program going. The only downfall is that the school has been using spss for years and would demand a similarl...

[Gluster-devel] How commonly applications make use of fadvise?
...ed for consuming this (fsal_obj_ops->io_advise), so applications running on top of NFS will benefit. I failed to see if the standard Samba/vfs can use it. A quick check in QEMU does not suggest it is used by the block drivers. I don't think Linux/FUSE supports fadvise though. So this is an oppertunity for a Gluster developer to get their name in the Linux kernel :-) Feature additions like this have been done before by us, and we should continue where we can. It is a relatively easy entry for contributing to the Linux kernel. > [1] https://linux.die.net/man/2/fadvise As well as local man-pa...

Multihead related issues
...sm for instance, but I'd like to bring it up now anyway. One use, to prove that it makes sense, is to have 6x6 viewports on the large monitor, but only 2x2 on the small (which is what I would want for myself). Most of the work shouldn't be to hard to port, but it would be nice to take this oppertunity to discuss the design and implementation. I know perspectives have come up on private e-mails, but since I don't know the details, I'm bringing it up here. -- Regards Kristian PS: The reason I've been a bit passive lately have been a combination of general IRL bussy-ness, and that I...

Using render functions in my own classes
...string. I managed to do this by extending ApplicationController::Base and calling the function. The problem is that the method relies on the contract that a request and response object are available. Passing the response and request from the ApplicationController that uses the FormHandler is an oppertunity, but is not very clean. Is there any possibility to use the render functions of Rails without the need to extend the Base class and the existens of the reponse en request objects. Thanks! wonder shaper and ''unmetered ip addresses/ranges''
...face is a virtual interface ie eth0:0, and tc doesn''t seem to support that. I have 2 subnets, one of which goes to the router which then goes to the internet, and the other subnet which contains the rest of the computers which go through this server and then onto the internet giving me the oppertunity to shape traffic and have a transparent proxy etc. I know its not secure, ie they can avoid the proxy all together, but in my office no-one has a clue how it all works, so I''m fine. So my question is, am I able to have certain ip destinations that are exempt from traffic situation, beca...

How commonly applications make use of fadvise?
Hi all, In a conversation between me, Milind and Csaba, Milind pointed out fadvise(2) [1] and its potential benefits to Glusterfs' caching translators like read-ahead etc. After discussing about it, we agreed that our performance translators can leverage the hints to provide better performance. Now the question is how commonly applications actually provide hints? Is it something that is used

Need advice on using R with large datasets
Hello everyone, I would like to get some advices on using R with some really large datasets. I'm using RH9 Linux R 1.8.1 for a research with a lot of numerical data. The datasets total to around 200Mb (shown by memory.size). During my data manipulation, the system memory usage grew to 1.5Gb, and this caused a lot of swapping activities on my 1Gb PC. This is just a small-scale experiment, the

ANN: acts_as_ferret
Hi all This week I have worked with Rails and Ferret to test Ferrets (and Lucenes) capabilities. I decided to make a mixin for ActiveRecord as it seemed the simplest possible solution and I ended up making this into a plugin. For more info on Ferret see: http://ferret.davebalmain.com/trac/ The plugin is functional but could easily be refined. Anyway I want to share it with you. Regard it as a
