Finding dependancies?
Hi although the background is that it happened on an hpc cluster, this question does *not* concern hpc computing with R. I was using R on a cluster and had to install several packages in my home directory. Now the head node was migrated to new hardware (new install as well) and many dependencies for my in $HOME installed packages, which were present on the old head, are missing on the new head.

FAQ submission: quality vs. bitrate
I would like to see the following information added to the FAQ at vorbis.com, appended to the "Audio Quality" section. "Uiver," "boa," and "jonI" from OPN's #Vorbis channel contributed and reviewed it. "What does the 'quality' setting mean?" Beginning with vorbislib 1.0-rc3, audio quality is no longer measured in kilobits per

Little list of horrors.
Hi all, I was investigating the SMB signing problems between Win2k clients and Windows XP servers and thought I'd take a look to see if there were any hotfix patches for Win2k that were post service pack 2. I discovered this list.... : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com/support/ServicePacks/Windows/2000/Win2000_Post-SP2_Hotfixes.asp of *amazing*

Sweave - problems with underscores in variable names...
Hi all, I've just started using the Friedrich Leisch's Sweave package to generate LaTeX reports with results of my analyses embedded as required. I've encountered a bit of a problem though in the processing of the resulting *.tex file that is as far as I can tell, down to the fact that my variable names have underscores ('_') in their names. The relevant section of code

NT 4.0 SP7
Guess what, after I posted I came across the list of hotfixes for after SP6 for NT4. It's basically SP7 under any other name - but requires SP6a installed. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q299444& It's a whopping 13.99 Mb to download (or if you believe IE's figures more than their website, 14.1 )

VMware and samba interoperability patches...
Has any progress been made about integrating the VMware samba-2.2.8a patch? VMware Inc was generous enough to add their value to this, and I think it's worth getting in. >From [http://www.vmware.com/download/open_sources.html]: http://www.vmware.com/download1/software/support/vmware-samba-2.2.8a.diff Please CC me on any replies. Incorrectly encoded (or decoded) tones
This wav produces a bit of audible static when encoded at the highest bitrate vorbis will allow me to encode at (30.7kbps avg.): http://staff.xmms.org/zinx/misc/5551234.wav.gz An encoded version, with the bitrate set to approximate 128kbps (I think it output to 29 some odd kbps): http://staff.xmms.org/zinx/misc/5551234.ogg This is with the latest CVS tree as of Sat May 12 10:06:17 UTC

Share using %U -> File already opened
...with Citrix Metaframe 1.8 (dont diss this because it is Terminal Services please!) using office 2000. On NT 4.0 TS w/metaframe 1.8 everything is okay. With "foo.txt" and notepad.exe on W2K it works nicely. When using process explorer in windows 2000 i see the PID which have the file opned has a 'handle' like this: ØDeviceØLanmanRedirectorØ:H:Ø5Øserver_nameØh-diskØfoo.doc Anyone got a clue to how to let Windows 2000 (office?) know that those home-shares are two diffrent shares with diffrent files? As a last resort we can fix it with: making a share "h-disk ---> /...

samba performance issue
Hi, I recently installed a new samba server to replace an older Novell machine. Now, we are having performance issues. I have installed many samba servers, and have not run into this problem before. Some background info: The server is an Athlon 1800+ w/ 512MB DDR RAM. We are using software raid on 80GB IDE ATA 100 drives with the VIA 82C3XX chipset. When mirroring the drives, we usually get

My adventures with Wine and Netscape
I recently installed wine-20010731, and for the past week or so I was trying unsuccessfully to get a version of Netscape (various 4.0+'s, for various win versions) to install; I needed a particular 3rd party plugin only available in .exe format. I found on google a reference from about a year ago of someone getting this to work, so I was going to post today with questions; lo and behold, last

Aliases and re-encoding
I only just joined this list, I did search the archives for relevant stuff, but didn't find anything. Sorry if I ask some FAQs. I have a couple of questions now that I have got icecast/ices/libshout and relevant libraries all installed and running... <p>i) Is there anywhere that all the XML tags in the config files are specified? Or are all of them contained in the samples?
