Security on lan
Hello, I would like your opionion on how secure samba is over an network. The thing is that where i live we all have 100mbps switched network to the internet. The whole town is using this. Is it safe to use samba directly over the network with encrypted password if i have for example a server in another part of the town. I can then set up with allow host so that only my computer can access the

How insecure is NIS ? Possible alternatives ?
Hi, In the past I've setup simple centralized authentication with NIS and NFS, without bothering about possible security implications. Over the next month I have to setup a new network in a local school, and I wonder if I should use NIS/NFS. I still have my own documentation, it's simple and somewhat bone-headed to setup, and it just works. RHEL/CentOS 7 still provide NIS, and I vaguely

Well, im never trying to change your optionion Rowland, i wont dare.. > Just what has an init system got to do with mounting a filesystem ?? Compaired to fstab, i get a better result with my nfs mounts. Before, somethimes, with the fstab setup, when logging in on ssh on an automounted userhome dir, with NVSv4 kerberized. Did fail for now and then. Now with the systemd, i didnt have any

...a month Soft Phone would be easy. However, there seems to be contriversy on weather or not this is a stable solution. The BroadVoice BYOD 100 Minute package will probably work well too since almost all calls will be incoming. Otherwise I am not too sure what else sounds good. If I could get opionions and suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thnaks, Jake Thompson

New member, new OS, old Tao user
...o Linux. Just recently, I had decided to investigate CentOS 4 before his announcement, and liked a lot of what I saw. Due to the Tao announcement, I have decided that CentOS will "have" to be the OS for my company in the future. Hence, my new membership to this list. I would like any opionions any of you may have to offer, and perhaps, some suggestions on migration to CentOS 3.7 from Tao 1 Update 6. I have usually applied updates only when needed on my current servers. Some cannot be updated due to the commercial applications being ran on them. So my first concern is the lateral migr...

Suggestion for tagging flac w/ cuesheets
Hi, I'd like to make a simple suggestion for tagging flac files containing cue-sheets. As discussed in "cuesheets w/ PERFORMER & TITLE track info" there is no standard for doing this yet. The developers were not willing to adopt the integrated cuesheet functionality for handling performer/artist information. I share this opionion since that would mean to sacrifice a very

plot.dendrogram and expressions
Hi, currently the "label" and "edgetext" attributes of a dendrogram are coerced to character before they are added to a plot with `text'. Is there a specific reason to do so (expect for the determination of the size of the character string to be plotted)? Otherwise one could plot the attributes directly via diff dendrogram.R /usr/src/R/src/library/stats/R/dendrogram.R

samba ADDC dns setup? ( this is same for any MS server )
Hai eveyone.   I know about the dns "things" in the past. DNS Islanding problems etc. This one is a bit hijacking the subject : “Horrible BIND9_DLZ DNS breakage after DC replaced and samba-tool domain demote --remove-other-dead-server”     I would like to suggest a smale change in how we suggest to setup samba ADDC dns things, and i do think this help in the setup of the AD

Yes it is a dimensioning question! Atom CPU
I am looking for pros and cons on the Intel Atom cpu. Has anybody been using these in production? I am looking at an Atom D510 (dual core 1.6GHz, 1M cache) to run maybe 25 to 30 extensions, 4 or 5 calls at once(maybe as high as 7 simultaneous calls), g729 all the way through except voicemail will be wav format for email purposes(requirement). I will be tying 3 of these together to route

Public share ask for a password
Hi, I am using a Samba-server (2:4.2.14+dfsg-0+deb8u2) on Debian stable. The Samba-client (samba-common ist 2:4.5.6+dfsg-1) runs on a Debian unstable. When I try to mount a Public share I am ask for a password. I don't know why. There should be no need for a password. And I can log in no matter if or which password I enter. I can I prevent the password questions? The is the IMO relevant
