OT: anything in CentOS 5.2 that uses opendns.com when browsing web?
I believe this is completely OT, but I want to be positive. I have a fully
up to date CentOS 5.2 box. During the past week, when surfing with Firefox
(and today, while testing with Konqueror), frequently, especially when DNS
is slow, I am seeing references to opendns.com At times, I end up on
opendns.com web pages, instead of at the web site I'm trying to get to. My
ISP, the phone company, claims this is not coming from their end and that
they are not using opendns.com. I was told they have two (2) DNS servers. I
haven't changed anything in my IPCop...

Went with OpenDNS for now
A few weeks ago I asked about firewalls and family filters. Lanny
Marcus, I believe, suggested OpenDNS. Just wanted to thank him (and
everyone here) for their suggestions. Eventually I would like to learn
about firewalls, but I don't really want to run another machine at
this time. OpenDNS is trivial to set up on the router and looks to be
just about exactly what I wanted.
Thanks. Sorry to hav...

OT: Firefox SSL error on Linux, Firefox OK on Windows - same web site
...SL error, after
clicking to get a more advanced report I do not get that error, using
Mozilla Firefox 3.0.13 on M$ Windows and I get the report OK on
Windows. It appears, when using Firefox on Linux, that it is not
ending up on the LinkShare web site and Firefox is giving me the below
error. I use OpenDNS.com for DNS service. Question: How can I verify
that there is no corruption in my Firefox installation on Linux and
that I have the latest SSL CAs for it? TIA! Lanny

Failing to get pxechain.com working, SYSLINUX 3.86.
...apps working great, I just have one specific app that
needs to be launched with it's own path, I have tested this specifically
with pxelinux.0 from 3.86/4.04 in path/ to verify it wasn't the programs
fault. also server address is 192.168.1.12, and is not multihomed
Now, 67.215.65.132 is opendns' landing page for all their redirects for
invalid domains/etc. Anyone have any clues as to whats going wrong here?
Why is opendns' landing page coming up? is pxechain attempting to do a
dns lookup that is failing? I do have opendns' servers setup as
forwarders for my local dns serve...

Samba bug 7818 / Debian bug 603729 RESOLVED finally (I think)
...trying other things. A recent unrelated problem
affecting the entire LAN apparently enabled me to resolve the repeated
winbind crashes.
Actually, Steve Langasek provided the necessary clue in December, but I
did not know what to do with the info at the time. He said:
It's the nature of OpenDNS that if you send a query to it for*any* hostname
that doesn't resolve, instead of (properly) giving a "no such host" message,
it instead responds with an IP address pointing to one of its own
webservers.
So any failure to resolve a name via WINS will result in it being resolved...

Web Filter
I have a location using a CentOS 5 server that's multihomed running Asterisk and iptables for internal web access.
Recently some sales people got busted surfing some explicit content so the owner wants something in there to block this.
I had heard of Dans Guardian and am reading about what's involved here but just wanted an opinion on what's the best solution for this. NTLM silent

and Secondary DNS IP's I want to use. Then, I save the file, quit, and
restart the network (service network restart). I see messages that the

The DNS I want to use is that of OpenDNS.com and I saw it work,

resolving names it is really slow slow with CentOS5.x using named
Hi all,
I have a problem using named with different CentOS5 servers (2 servers): all
they are really slow to resolv any internet address and most of time fails to
resolv. This situation differs if I use "forwarders" servers like opendns:
resolving names it is really really quickly. And I don't understand why.
On the other hand I have tested three DNS servers using Windows 2003, Windows
2008 and Ubuntu hardy and these problems doesn't occurs (I don't need to
configure forwarders on any of them): all resolves any...

NetBIOS name resolution from Linux
Hi all,
I set up a Samba server (version 3.0.24) names "Lamp" on a Debian Etch
distribution. It provides a "guest" (guest ok = yes, guest only = yes,
security = SHARE) access to a "share" directory, which works fine.
Indeed, I can access \\lamp\share from a Windows machine (named
"Ginger") without issuing a password.
I can also ping the Linux machine

Please review my smb.conf
Hi Rowland

The Pi has a fixed IP address and hostname. I see:
$ cat /etc/hostname
RPHS
$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by resolvconf
nameserver 208.67.222.123
nameserver 208.67.220.123
So the DNS seems arbitrary. I don't understand what the DNS should be for a

...g? What does it really do?
Three more notes: 1) I see no problems in daily operation. All web browsing
works as does resolution for local machines. 2) This bind server does not get
queries from outside my local network. 3) I use OpenNIC as the "forwarders"
servers. I used to use OpenDNS until they stopped handling Yahoo email
correctly.

Securing tinc config files
Thanks Guus
So based of this , having your central tinc server in VPS Provider , will
allow potentially the provider to replicate your config files and thus
exposing all your remote sites connected. My situation I face is all my
remote sites have dynamic addresses ,and in order for me to create a
connection point between the sites is to have a central server in cloud
with public address. Therefor

...server for those names.
In some cases, as I have seen, there are entries that have private
addresses. I consider this as being quite bad because it reveals the
private address space of the company's/institution's IT infrastructure.
What about open resolvers? I am not talking here about OpenDNS or
Google, who monitor their infrastructure and maybe they even rate limit
the queries per source IP address if too many come from one particular
source. I am talking about servers that are not being monitored. I say
this because if you monitor your servers and if you understand the DNS
techn...

Huh, must be an OpenDNS issue, it works from my phone.
I wonder if I'm running into a similar defect on the PC UPS... I could try resetting the driver every few hours (this, in addition to replugging the cable fixes the issue temporarily), but that does feel like a hack that doesn't fix the root cause.

Securing tinc config files
...e VPS seems like the cheapest option and it

Same situation for me but I use a dynamic dns provider (there are a
lot out there, free and paid : choose by yourself the best for you)
coupled with dns-o-matic (a free service from opendns that act as a
client for dynamic dns providers, so you gain two propagations of your
addresses).
So, make a dynamic dns provider account, make a dns-o-matic account,
install and configure a ddns client on one or all of your machines or
routers, and you can use FQDN for your tinc configurations.

Please review my smb.conf
...it uses and if it is also your dhcp server, you need
to ensure that it supplies a domain name as well as the ipaddress. You
also need to check that all the windows machines use the same workgroup
name, from your smb.conf 'WORKGROUP' .
The dns nameservers '208.67.22x.123' are the openDNS ones, I would
suggest you change these to the google ones '8.8.8.8' & '8.8.4.4'. For
how to do this and to possibly set a domain name, see your routers
documentation.
