Yes I have provisioned the samba server as an Active Directory domain controller (I mentioned that in the first e-mail). The reason for linking the two is to provide easy access to additional MS services that won't be hosted internally (e.g. OneDrive, Skype, MS Store). Ultimately I am using this as a private domain at home to simplify device management but I want to continue be able to use existing MS services as well. ...ho this. I experimented with networked home directories for laptop users for a while and never managed to find anything that resembled a nice experience. Even on Windows it mostly sucks. I don?t expect this reality has changed much. I would instead look at cloud sync clients. The open source Linux OneDrive client is pretty good these days for example. Of course the ?cloud? end can also be on-premise using OwnCloud or NextCloud or whatever the latest cool thing is.

What do people use to make files available offline for road warriors/students and sync them back to the fileservers when they come home? Are there known gotchas, do's and dont's? I'd like to avoid using OneDrive and GDrive. I am currently Wondering if Windows Folder Sync would work in such a setup. The mobile users are all using Window 10 1803 x64 laptops. Any ideas?
