data manipulation in R
Dear List:
I have a data manipulation problem that I was unable
to solve in R. I did it in SQL, and it may be that
the solution in R is to do it in SQL, but I wondered
if people could imagine a vector-based solution.
Imagine a list A[i] of observers who observe some set
of events B[j]. Each observer i may observe one or
more events, and each event j may have been observed
by one or more observers. Thus the data are a
lower-triangular array AxB where each cell [i,j] has a
zero or one indicating whether observer i saw event j.
I am inter...

SQL like function?
Hi RUsers,
I am wonder if I can search observations whose IDs matches any of the
values in another vector, such as in MySQL. While I am learing MySQL for
future database management, I appreciate if anyone could give me a hint.
Suppose I have one 5*1 vector containing observation IDs and
frequencies, and one 3*1 vector containing observatio...

Alternating between "for loops"
Dear All,
I would like to apply two different "for loops" to each set of four columns
of a matrix (the loops here are simplifications of the actual loops I will
be running which involve multiple if/else statements).
I don't know how to "alternate" between the loops depending on which column
is "running through the loop" at the time.

Declaring ActiveRecord observers
Hello
I''m using the ''act_as_authenticated'' plugin to implement a small and
simple authentication system in my app. Everything is working just
fine and the world is a better place to live in. The plugin creates a
ActiveRecord observer in order to send the newly registered user a
confirmation e-mail.
Per the API docs [1], one should declare the observer in the
config/environment.rb file under the ''config.active_record.observers =
:comment_observer, :signup_observer''.
But reading the generated source code, th...

questions about "metafor" package
Hello,
I would like to do a meta-analysis with the package « metafor ». Ideally I would like to use a mixed model because I’m interested to see the effect of some moderators. But the data set I managed to collect from literature presents two limits.
- Firstly, for each observation, I have means for a treatment and for a control, but I don’t always have corresponding standard deviations (52 of a total of 93 observations don’t have standard deviations). Nevertheless I have the sample sizes for all observations so I wonder if it was possible to weight observations by sampl...

Removing form observers
Hi,
I''m developing a Rails app which uses dynamic forms. To implement
these, I''ve used AJAX and Rails''s built-in form observers.
Unfortunately, I''m having a problem.
This is how the form starts:
* Country select box [OBSERVED] (Republic of Ireland selected)
* County select box [OBSERVED] (none selected, list of Republic of
Irish counties in the drop down)
when a user selects a county, the browser requests th...

Function similar to cumsum/cumprod
Hello, everyone
I wonder if there is in R somewhere a function similar to cumsum().
The function calculates a statistic (say mean or standard deviation)
buy adding consequtively one more data point.
So, say I have a timeseries of 100 observations.
I start by calculating mean of first 30 observations
Then I add one observation and calculate mean of 31 observations
Then I add one more observation and calculate mean of 32 observation,
and so on until the end
Is there a function like that in R?
Best,
Sergey

Observer best practices
I''ve seen two ways of connecting observers:
1) In the observer class put
observe MyModel
2) In the controller class put
observer :my_observer
What is the difference between these two? Also, is it necessary to put
in the observer class the following?
MyObserver.instance

test for proportion or concordance
Hello group,
my question is deciding what test would be appropriate for following question.
An experiment 'A' yielded 3200 observations of which 431 are
significant. Similarly, using same method, another experiment 'B' on a
different population yielded 2541 observations of which 260 are
significant.
There are 180 observations that are common between significant
observations of A and B.
(180 are common between 431 and...

Question about data used to fit the mixed model
Hi everyone,
I would like to ask a question regarding to the data used to fit the mixed
model.
I wonder that, for the response variable data used to fit the mixed model
(either via "spm" or "lme"), we must have several observations per subject
(i.e. Yij, i = 1,..,M, j = 1,.., ni) or it can be just one observation per
subject (i.e. Yi, i = 1,...,M). Since we have to specify the groups for
random effect components, if we have only one observation per subject, then
each group will have only one observation.
Thank y...

bad move? - complex form with *many* observe_field's
...ere the a, b, c, etc are the number of the diff types of assoc objs.
Also, it''s designed to have an autosave function. I''ve taken an
approach that is working, but I''m concerned that it may not be the
best, mostly from a performance aspect.
Each of the text fields has an observe_field set up for it with
a :frequency => 1.5 (this seemed to be the best setting for this to
catch rapid typing without droopping chars while the autosave is
performed).
And each of the selects observe_field() does not have the frequency
set, so that it calls the autosave fxn only on change (...

Decoupled observers for controllers?
In the Rails Recipes book the recipe "Keeping track of who did what"
explains how to do decoupled observing of models.
In my application I''d like to do a similar thing but watching the
controllers. For example, when somebody hits the login method of the
Security controller, I''d like to make a note of it. In this case I
could observe the User model and watch for authenticate?, b...
