Simple password checker
...o work out how to do this -
it seems like it should be simple - just take the password and username
and ask the NT server if it's correct.
If anyone could point me in the right direction for doing this, please
do.
I think I just need to call
auth_ok = server_validate(user,domain,pass,passlen,ntpass,ntpasslen);
.. but I think I must do a little more than just call the function.
What's the difference between pass and ntpass ?
Thanks in advance,
Rik

Insecure smbpasswd with ldap ??
hi there i have recently moved all users to LDAP and incorporated the
Samba schema i have allocated servers read only access to the data
except for what is required ie lmpass ... ntpass .. what disturbs me is
that smbpasswd demands write access to
uid, rid, primarygroup,cn,displayname i would rather it did not do this i
fully understand why samba requires write access to other attr's in fact
in my config these are read only except for servers ...
im going to be hacking away at...

URGENT: REDHAT 6.1 STORES SAMBA PRIVATE FILES IN /etc
dear redhat,
i examined a friend's system today, to help him configure it. assuming
that he just "installed" from scratch the samba package, it appears that
you have provided a default smb.conf file for redhat 6.1 that puts samba
private configuration files in /etc. the suggested options, for example
show "smbpasswd file = /etc/smbpasswd".
this is REALLY bad.

of accessing smbpasswd directly, this will have affected *all*

so, if you have win95, please try changing a user password and report to

i also fixed samedit's "ntpass" command to operate correctly at the same
time, because it too was minorly broken.

the use of "netbios name" was a red herring and a false alarm. it's
perfectly ok to use different netbios names for your server, although not

rpcclient problem

smb: \> samtest
samtest
SAM Encryption Test
SAMR_R_UNKNOWN_38: Unknown NT error
smb: \>
all i need to be able to do is change the nt password, but the ntpass command gives the same error.
any ideas what's causing this error? i have a blank smb.conf file (i am not running smbd or nmbd... i just want to be a client not a server)

...ave smbfs compiled in your kernel or as a module.
You want to run samba 2.2.0 (better) or 2.0.7, or at least use smbmount
and smbmnt from there.
You want ro run a 2.2.19 kernel or a 2.4.5 one (2.2.19 may be a better
choice for a backup thingy)
As root:
mount -t smbfs -o username=ntuser,password=ntpass,workgroup=domain //server/share /mnt/point
Details are in the smbmount and smbmnt manpages. It is possible to set it
up to allow users to mount.
